About the position

The University of Hawai'i is seeking a part-time temporary Publication and Communication Specialist for the Daniel K. Inouye College of Pharmacy. This position is classified as a Casual Hire, which means it is intended for short-term or part-time work. Casual Hire employees are not eligible for most benefits provided to regular employees, such as paid holidays or leave. The appointment may last for up to 89 days for full-time employees and up to one calendar year for part-time employees. The expected start date for this position is July 2024, or soon thereafter, and it is not to exceed six months. In this role, the Publication and Communication Specialist will be responsible for writing and editing articles, as well as managing the layout for communications related to the College. The specialist will collaborate with various stakeholders, including students, alumni, and faculty, to gather updates and stories. Additionally, the specialist will supervise the distribution and posting of communications, ensuring that information is prepared and delivered effectively to the media and the general public. The specialist will also advise the administration and faculty on media relations and serve as the liaison to the University Relations office to ensure consistent messaging. Working closely with the Dean and the Executive team, the specialist will develop strategies for disseminating information to both public and private stakeholders. Responsibilities include planning and developing promotional materials, maintaining a digital database of photos, and serving as the chief editor of the annual College magazine. The specialist will be responsible for all news releases and media inquiries directed to the Dean's office, as well as identifying and prioritizing stories and events for coverage.

Responsibilities

  • Write and edit articles and manage layout for DKICP communications.
  • Collaborate with DKICP for student organization and alumni stories, and with faculty for updates.
  • Supervise the distribution and posting of communications.
  • Prepare and deliver information for release orally or in writing to the media and general public.
  • Advise administration and faculty on media relations and serve as college liaison to UH Hilo's University Relations.
  • Work closely with the Dean and Executive team to develop strategies for disseminating information to stakeholders.
  • Plan and develop promotional materials for Dean reports, messages, articles, and web copy.
  • Develop public relations strategies and messages to advance the College's goals and improve its image.
  • Maintain and update a digital database of photos and communicate their location with others in the College.
  • Serve as chief editor of the annual College magazine.
  • Authorize all news releases, stories, and articles to media; manage publicity and promotion for special events.
  • Develop and maintain contacts with media, community leaders, and public relations personnel to advise the Dean on opinions affecting the College.
  • Identify, solicit, and prioritize stories, photographs, functions, and events; create layout and direct design.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Possession of a baccalaureate degree in English or Journalism.
  • Three years of progressively responsible professional experience in English or Journalism, or equivalent education/training or experience.
  • Considerable editorial background in news organizations and universities, including vetting and developing sources.
  • Demonstrated experience in project management working with internal and external teams on results-based materials.
