About the position

The Utah State University (USU) Extension Create Better Health (SNAP-ED) program is seeking a part-time educator to provide nutrition and physical activity education to low-income individuals and families, particularly within the refugee population. This role involves delivering established curriculum, engaging with diverse communities, managing program reporting, and collaborating with local agencies to enhance food access and physical activity opportunities. The position requires adherence to federal guidelines and effective communication skills to foster community engagement.

Responsibilities

  • Deliver established Create Better Health curriculum on nutrition, food safety, budgeting, and physical activity to SNAP-eligible groups.
  • Conduct face-to-face classes for low-income individuals and families.
  • Engage with individuals from diverse cultural backgrounds and provide culturally relevant services.
  • Collaborate with community partners to improve healthy food access and physical activity opportunities.
  • Ensure healthy choices are accessible for clients and report program progress and impacts.
  • Recruit program participants through various channels and coordinate with local organizations.
  • Familiarize clients with community resources and facilitate workshops at public events.
  • Adhere to USDA and USU guidelines, maintaining confidentiality and compliance with the code of conduct.

Requirements

  • Lived experience with and understanding of refugee populations in Utah.
  • Fluency in Arabic, Afghani, or Somali.
  • Experience teaching diverse cultural groups.
  • Basic knowledge of food preparation and nutrition.
  • Willingness to learn and work with people, keeping accurate records and reports.
  • Personal internet access and computer skills for communication and reporting.
  • Valid driver's license and access to reliable transportation for job responsibilities.

Nice-to-haves

  • Understanding of Create Better Health and SNAP-Ed.
  • Experience in refugee health and/or nutrition education.
