About the position

The Residential Driver is responsible for providing safe, efficient, and courteous waste removal services to customers. This role involves collecting solid waste or recyclables from curbside and backdoor routes and transporting them to post-collection facilities. The driver must adhere to safety standards and maintain the cleanliness and functionality of the vehicle while ensuring compliance with all relevant regulations.

Responsibilities

  • Operate a residential/recycling collection truck and ancillary equipment to collect solid waste and recyclables.
  • Load solid waste, yard waste, and recyclables into the waste collection vehicle.
  • Operate equipment on the truck to compact trash into the vehicle.
  • Complete pre-trip and post-trip safety inspections and reports.
  • Communicate vehicle mechanical problems to the mechanic and supervisor.
  • Maintain route quality standards as predetermined by management.
  • Follow all safety standards and equipment checks in performance of duties.
  • Maintain a clean vehicle by cleaning the cab interior and exterior.
  • Identify and tag prohibited waste items and remove them from the waste cart or can.
  • Manage assigned Helper(s) if applicable.
  • Conform to all applicable laws, regulations, and company policies.
  • Ensure all required personal protective equipment is worn at all times.
  • Report all accidents or incidents to supervisors immediately.
  • Exhibit a professional demeanor at all times while on route or in uniform.
  • Maintain accurate records of services performed.
  • Maintain inventory of containers and recommend purchases to the supervisor.
  • Work closely with the supervisor to improve routing efficiencies.
  • May be required to work overtime.
  • Attend safety and branch meetings.
  • Perform other duties as required or requested by management.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED desired.
  • Must possess a Commercial Driver's License (CDL).
  • Minimum one year of commercial driving experience or CDL school certificate.
  • Must meet relevant criteria for safety-sensitive functions according to company standards.
  • Demonstrated ability to safely drive the truck and operate the equipment.

Nice-to-haves

  • Knowledge of the truck and its components and basic maintenance requirements for safe operation.
  • Ability to control operations of equipment and maneuver the truck in tight spaces.
  • Ability to recognize unacceptable waste materials.
  • Effective communication skills with internal and external customers.
  • Ability to read, write, and comprehend associated documents and maps.
  • Flexibility to adapt to change and seek continuous improvement.
