About the position

The Health Care Tech I / Medical Assistant position at the Colorado Department of Corrections involves providing routine support services and clinical tasks for incarcerated offenders in various settings, including outpatient clinics and telehealth. The role is crucial for ensuring the health and safety of inmates through medical assistance, documentation, and coordination of care. The position requires flexibility in working hours, including shifts, weekends, and holidays, and emphasizes the importance of customer service and effective communication in a correctional environment.

Responsibilities

  • Provide assistance to telehealth providers by scheduling medical appointments and taking medical histories, vital signs, and documenting appropriately.
  • Assist physicians, physician assistants, and nurse practitioners with minor medical and surgical procedures.
  • Administer medications as per training and DOC program requirements.
  • Participate in restraining inmates for medical reasons when necessary.
  • Perform clinical support services, including answering phones and maintaining office equipment and supplies.
  • Coordinate grievances and complete necessary documentation for clinical operations.
  • Order and restock patient education materials and medications in the clinic.
  • Observe and report inmates' physical and emotional conditions to medical providers.
  • Ensure safety and security in the clinical environment through proper control measures.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Graduate from an accredited Medical Assistant program with Certification or Registration or Medication Aide Certificate or License
  • Receive Qualified Medication Administration Personnel (QMAP) certification within 180 days of hire
  • Ability to effectively treat inmate patients in various settings
  • Ability to follow patient confidentiality standards
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
  • Ability to read and comprehend the English language
  • Ability to create accessible documents and technical content
  • Excellent discernment and decision-making skills
  • Ability to work a variety of shifts on a full-time basis.

  • Experience providing medical assistance in a correctional environment
  • Intravenous Certification
  • Phlebotomy trained and certified
  • Long term and acute care experience
  • Telehealth experience.
