About the position

The CECS Director of Business Operations at the University of Michigan is a senior leadership role responsible for overseeing the budgetary, financial, human resource, research administration, and facilities functions of the College of Engineering and Computer Science (CECS). This position supports the Dean in implementing strategic initiatives and managing a significant budget, while also ensuring compliance with university policies and effective operational management.

Responsibilities

  • Manage budget and funds for CECS, including general funds, gift funds, designated funds, and sponsored activity.
  • Provide strategic advice and counsel, prepare financial reports and analyses, and enforce fiscal policy.
  • Perform financial projections and prepare multi-year forecasts to support budget planning.
  • Oversee workflows and department administrative activities, ensuring compliance with university policies.
  • Collaborate with the Office of Research to manage CECS research commitments and expenditures.
  • Supervise direct reports and manage staff hiring and evaluation processes.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Finance or Accounting or related field.
  • Five years of progressive accounting or financial management experience.
  • Prior experience leading a team or supervising people.
  • Strong experience with Microsoft Office Suite and Google Workplace.
  • Demonstrated analytical and critical thinking skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication, and customer service skills.

Nice-to-haves

  • Advanced degree in finance, accounting, or related field.
  • Experience with University Financial/Human Resources systems.
  • Knowledge of and experience using University Data sources, e.g., Business Objects, Tableau.
  • Experience working in a union environment.
  • Eight years of related experience, preferably in Higher Education.
