About the position

The Cement Development Engineer (CDE) position at Ash Grove Cement is designed as a learning and training opportunity for individuals looking to develop their leadership, technical, and organizational skills within a manufacturing environment. The CDE will engage in a variety of assigned job functions across different departments of the facility, gaining comprehensive knowledge of the cement manufacturing process. This role emphasizes the importance of safety, as the CDE will be expected to promote and adhere to all plant safety guidelines while developing an understanding of the operational processes involved in cement production. Throughout their tenure, the CDE will have a mentoring relationship with a key staff member and will participate in various training courses aimed at enhancing both technical and soft skills. The position requires rotation through departments such as quarry, production, maintenance, shipping, environmental, safety, and quality, allowing the CDE to gain a holistic view of the manufacturing process. The CDE will also engage in process engineering activities, including mass and heat balances, air flows, and circuit efficiency studies, as well as maintenance engineering tasks like equipment inspection and preventative maintenance. In addition to technical training, the CDE will complete training in operational support functions, including Human Resources, Finance, and Management. The role also involves participation in electrical and automation engineering activities, such as programming the plant's PLC and DCS systems, conducting energy efficiency studies, and performing performance testing on production equipment. Candidates should be prepared for a dynamic work environment that includes both indoor and outdoor exposure, with potential for relocation based on skill set and development needs. Satisfactory development will be measured through various skills fundamental for advancement within the company, including leadership, effective communication, and professional networking.

Responsibilities

  • Promote and follow all plant safety guidelines.
  • Develop an understanding of the cement manufacturing process and propose changes to improve operating costs, efficiencies, environmental impact, and product quality.
  • Participate in process activities within various manufacturing departments, including quarry, production, maintenance, shipping, environmental, safety, and quality.
  • Complete training in operational support functions, including Human Resources, Finance, and Management.
  • Participate in process engineering activities such as mass and heat balances, air flows, circuit efficiency studies, and related testing.
  • Engage in maintenance engineering activities such as equipment inspection, preventative maintenance, reliability engineering, and capital projects.
  • Participate in electrical and automation engineering activities, including programming of PLC and DCS systems and energy efficiency studies.
  • Undertake performance testing and measurements on production equipment.
  • Complete training matrix and develop safe work habits, leadership skills, effective communication, and professional networking.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in Chemical Engineering required.
  • Minimum 3.0 GPA or above preferred.
  • Co-op/internship experience is a plus.
  • Previous work experience is preferred, but not required.
  • Ability to read, write and understand warning labels, instructions, signs, etc.
