About the position

The Cement Finisher Helper position at the Architect of the Capitol involves assisting journey-level cement finishers in various construction and renovation projects. The role is temporary, lasting up to 13 months, and focuses on performing routine cement finishing duties while learning progressively more complex tasks. The incumbent will work primarily on surfaces such as sidewalks, steps, walls, and ramps, ensuring compliance with safety regulations and quality standards.

Responsibilities

  • Assist journey-level cement finishers with maintenance, repair, and construction work on surfaces such as sidewalks, steps, walls, curbs, and ramps.
  • Mix, pour, spread, and level cement and concrete as directed.
  • Remove broken concrete and prepare sub-surfaces for repairs.
  • Set up job sites by establishing safety tripods and scaffolding, and secure confined space job sites as needed.
  • Remove old concrete, set forms, and finish new concrete surfaces.
  • Place steel dividers and expansion joints in sidewalks, and lay drainpipes in cement.
  • Smooth and level cement surfaces using trowels and other tools, applying finishing coats as required.
  • Measure dimensions to calculate quantities of materials needed for projects.
  • Design and construct various forms prior to pouring cement using precise measurements and modern techniques.
  • Perform mixing and applying toppings, colors, grout, epoxy overlays, or waterproofing compounds according to job specifications.
  • Participate in the demolition of concrete structures using pneumatic tools and other power equipment.
  • Ensure compliance with AOC and OSHA safety rules and regulations, taking corrective action on unsafe conditions as necessary.

Requirements

  • Must be a U.S. Citizen.
  • Ability to perform the work of the position without more than normal supervision.
  • Must be able to pass a drug test.
