About the position

The Cemetery Caretaker position involves performing various manual and physical tasks essential for the maintenance and care of cemetery grounds. This role is critical in ensuring the respectful upkeep of the cemetery, including grave digging, landscaping, and the operation of maintenance equipment. The position is a term appointment not exceeding 13 months, with potential for extension, and requires flexibility in scheduling to meet the needs of the cemetery, especially during holidays and weekends.

Responsibilities

  • Operate small tractors and riding lawn mowers.
  • Transplant shrubs and dig graves to the proper level.
  • Cut and remove sod, tamp and level dirt using hand and power tools.
  • Assist in lifting and placing caskets on lowering devices.
  • Load and unload materials and align headstones.
  • Clean and clear cemetery grounds of debris using various tools.
  • Weed, mulch, and apply fertilizer to cemetery grounds.
  • Prune shrubs and low-level dead branches.
  • Remove snow and ice from pathways and areas as needed.
  • Clean headstones using sprayers and hand brushes.

Requirements

  • Must possess a valid state driver's license.
  • Experience in landscaping, grounds keeping, or related trades.
  • Ability to operate hand tools and power tools safely.
  • Ability to perform heavy physical tasks and work outdoors in various weather conditions.

Nice-to-haves

  • Supervising experience is preferred.
