About the position

The US Census Bureau is seeking a Census Field Representative who will primarily conduct in-person interviews to collect survey or census data within a designated geographic area. This role requires effective communication with respondents and the ability to accurately record data using a laptop or survey forms. The position involves maintaining personal payroll records and completing necessary training, with a focus on ensuring accurate data collection and respondent engagement.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct in-person interviews (door to door) and phone interviews as needed to collect survey or census data.
  • Communicate effectively with respondents, supervisors, and other relevant parties.
  • Understand and explain survey materials to respondents, ensuring accurate data collection.
  • Enter accurate and complete information into a laptop computer or onto survey forms.
  • Maintain personal payroll records reflecting hours worked, miles driven, and reimbursements for travel and communications.
  • Complete required training in-person or online.

Requirements

  • Must be at least 18 years old.
  • Must be a US Citizen.
  • Good hearing and ability to read small print on surveys.
  • Good physical condition to drive, climb stairs, and walk for extended periods.
  • Occasional lifting of materials weighing up to 50 lbs.
  • Willingness to work days, evenings, and weekends.
  • Ability to work a varying number of hours per week.
  • Occasional overnight travel for training and work assignments may be required.
  • Access to a vehicle or public transportation for completing work in the assigned area.
  • Establish and maintain a safe work environment in your residence.
  • Willingness to use various communication methods (face-to-face, phone, email, etc.).
  • Access to a landline or mobile phone and an internet connection.

Nice-to-haves

  • Bilingual skills are preferred, especially in languages other than English.
