About the position

The Certified Pharmacy Technician at VCU Health System plays a crucial role in supporting pharmacists in delivering pharmaceutical care services to a diverse patient population, including neonatal, pediatric, adolescent, adult, and geriatric age groups. This position involves assisting in the preparation, dispensing, record keeping, and transportation of medications, ensuring that all tasks are performed with a high level of proficiency and attention to detail. The technician operates under minimal supervision, demonstrating exemplary work behaviors and taking ownership of the success of the work area. During the transitional duty period, the technician is expected to learn, perform, and complete various assignments and responsibilities as assigned. To be successful in this role, the technician must maintain current certification by the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) or possess valid ExCPT certification from the National Health Career Association, along with licensure from the Virginia State Board of Pharmacy. A clean criminal record is essential, as the position involves handling controlled substances and requires a high level of trust and security. The technician must also be prepared to work all shifts, including weekends and holidays, and be available for emergency coverage as needed. The role demands effective communication with all staff members and the ability to identify and report equipment or operational issues to the pharmacist or pharmacy manager. The technician will interact with other healthcare practitioners in a multidisciplinary environment, contributing to a collaborative approach to patient care. Physical requirements include lifting 20-50 lbs, prolonged standing, and the ability to handle a fast-paced work environment with multiple priorities and frequent customer interactions.

Responsibilities

  • Assist pharmacists in providing pharmaceutical care services to patients.
  • Prepare and dispense medications under the supervision of a pharmacist.
  • Maintain accurate record keeping for medications dispensed.
  • Transport medications to various departments as needed.
  • Communicate effectively with staff and healthcare practitioners.
  • Identify and report equipment or operational problems to the pharmacist or pharmacy manager.
  • Perform tasks that do not legally require a pharmacist's supervision or verification.
  • Adapt to a fast-paced environment and handle multiple priorities.

Requirements

  • Current certification by the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) OR valid ExCPT certification from the National Health Career Association.
  • Current licensure with the Virginia State Board of Pharmacy.
  • High school diploma or GED.

Nice-to-haves

  • One year previous pharmacy practice experience in a similar setting.
  • Experience using a standard keyboard with a typing speed of 20-30 words per minute.
