About the position

The Town of Apex is seeking Certified Firefighters to enhance community safety through effective fire suppression, rescue operations, and emergency medical services. This role involves working in a dynamic environment, participating in ongoing training, and maintaining readiness for various emergency situations. Firefighters will be stationed at one of six fire stations and will work 24-hour rotations, contributing to the overall mission of the Apex Fire Department to ensure public safety and risk reduction.

Responsibilities

  • Respond to fire alarms and participate in fire suppression activities.
  • Participate in remediation activities of chemical spills and hazardous materials incidents.
  • Respond to emergency medical calls and provide EMT response services.
  • Participate in ongoing training activities to maintain emergency responder skills.
  • Inspect station and equipment for proper appearance and condition.
  • Perform maintenance and cleaning of fire apparatus, equipment, and station facilities.
  • Inspect, clean, and maintain fire hydrants and hoses, and maintain maintenance records.
  • Assist with the preparation of fire reports and participate in special projects as required.
  • Conduct pre-incident surveys and station tours, and make fire prevention talks in schools and other settings.
  • Train in NIMS modules and other required skills.

Requirements

  • Graduation from High School or GED.
  • Possession of a valid Class C Driver's License issued by the State of North Carolina.
  • NC Firefighter Certification (Firefighter II) or equivalent certification with reciprocity eligibility.
  • NC Emergency Medical Technician (EMT-B) certification or ability to obtain it by the start date.
  • NC Hazardous Materials Level I Responder certification.
  • Completion of Incident Command Courses meeting NFPA 1561/NIMS-ICS 100, 200, 700, and 800.
  • Skill in teamwork and collaborative conflict resolution.
  • Knowledge of information technology applications relevant to the department's work.
  • Ability to establish effective working relationships with employees and the public.
  • Ability to make sound judgments in emergency situations.
