About the position

The Certified Hemodialysis Technician (CHT) plays a crucial role in providing care to patients with renal failure under the supervision of a Dialysis Nurse. This position involves assisting with clinical and operational procedures to enhance patient health, ensuring compliance with safety protocols, and maintaining equipment and supplies. The CHT is responsible for monitoring patients during dialysis treatments, obtaining blood samples, and providing patient education, all while adhering to company policies and regulatory standards.

Responsibilities

  • Assist with clinical and operational procedures to improve patient health and minimize hospitalizations and missed treatments.
  • Demonstrate effective use of supplies and staff labor hours.
  • Obtain blood samples, centrifuge samples, and pack labs as required to complete physician orders.
  • Provide patient education as needed under the direction of the Facility Administrator or Dialysis Nurse within scope of practice.
  • Perform assigned duties under the supervision of the Dialysis Nurse to meet patient care and operational needs.
  • Follow policies and procedures for personal protective equipment (PPE) use.
  • Setup hemodialysis machines according to policies and procedures.
  • Respond to visual and audio alarms on machines; troubleshoot machine alarms.
  • Remove disposables and clean station after each treatment following policies and procedures.
  • Be familiar with emergency equipment and participate in all emergency operational measures.
  • Obtain pre and post treatment weight of patient per policies and procedures.
  • Safely initiate and terminate dialysis treatments per prescription while following policies and procedures.
  • Monitor all patients during dialysis treatments at a minimum of every 30 minutes with accurate documentation.
  • Follow policies and procedures for acid and bicarbonate preparations.
  • Maintain Hemodialysis supplies as needed and assist in keeping supply room clean and organized.
  • Conduct water testing on dialysis machines per policies and procedures.
  • Document quality control logs throughout the day and after all treatments, as required.
  • Report any significant information or change in patient condition to the Dialysis Nurse and take appropriate action.
  • Report machine problems to the Biomedical Technician and Facility Administrator.
  • Participate in staff meetings as required and attend in-services and continuing education sessions.
  • Participate in team concepts and promote a team environment.

Requirements

  • Must have a valid CHT/CCHT national certification or state specific certification as defined by Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS).
  • Current CPR certification required.
  • Confirmation of ability to differentiate primary colors.
  • Working knowledge of the English language and ability to communicate in writing as well as verbally.
  • Must have basic computer skills; proficiency in all NRC clinical applications required within 30 days of hire.
  • Must successfully complete training program approved by the Medical Director, including demonstrated competency, within 30 days of hire.
  • Successful completion of clinical skills checklist within 30 days of hire and annually thereafter.
