About the position

The Certified Home Health Aide (CHHA) position at Comfort Care Hospice involves providing essential personal care and support to patients in hospice settings, primarily in their homes. The role is crucial in ensuring the comfort and dignity of terminally ill patients while assisting with daily living activities and maintaining communication with clinical teams and families. This per diem position offers flexibility and the opportunity to make a significant impact in patients' lives.

Responsibilities

  • Performing personal care needs after given a patient's assignment and attending to his/her requests promptly.
  • Meeting safety needs of patients and using equipment safely and properly.
  • Giving personal care including baths, back rubs, oral hygiene, shampoos, and changing bed linen as assigned.
  • Assisting in dressing and undressing patients as assigned.
  • Maintaining strong communication skills between families and clinical teams.
  • Assisting in feeding the patient as assigned.
  • Taking and recording oral, rectal, and axillary temperatures, pulse, respiration, and blood pressure when ordered.
  • Providing proper care and observation of patient's skin to prevent breakdown of tissue over bony prominence.
  • Reporting on patient's condition and significant changes to the Case Manager.
  • Assisting in ambulation and exercise as instructed by the hospice nurse or therapist.
  • Offering and assisting with bedpans and urinals, and providing assistance with light laundry needs.
  • Performing range of motion and other simple procedures as an extensional therapy service as ordered.
  • Providing respite for patient's/family/caregiver when on-site, as appropriate.
  • Keeping patient's living area clean and orderly, as assigned.
  • Adhering to the organization's documentation and care procedures and standards of personal and professional conduct.
  • Participating in quality assessment performance improvement teams and activities.
  • Being respectful of patient and family/caregiver environment and personal needs.

Requirements

  • Must have an active Certified Home Health Aide (CHHA) license.
  • Meets the training requirements of the State of California.
  • At least 18 years of age.
  • Ability to read and follow written instructions and document care given.
  • Understanding of hospice philosophy and comfort in providing specialized care to the terminally ill.
  • Satisfactory references from previous employers.
  • Self-directing with the ability to work with little direct supervision.
  • Comfortable with issues of death/dying and provides a calm manner in a patient's home.
  • Empathy for the needs of the ill, injured, frail, and impaired.
  • Current CPR certification.
  • Demonstrates tact, patience, and good personal hygiene.
  • Licensed driver with an insured automobile in good working order.

Nice-to-haves

  • Hospice experience (1 year preferred).
  • Good oral and written communication skills.
  • Good organizational skills.
  • Positive attitude.
