About the position

The Certified IT Administrator (Database), II position at the City of New York involves leading a team responsible for SQL Server database administration functions. The role focuses on maintaining multiple database environments, ensuring data security, availability, and integrity, and collaborating with various teams to deliver effective database solutions. The position is integral to the New York City Police Department's mission of enhancing public safety through advanced technology and efficient data management.

Responsibilities

  • Leads a team performing SQL Server database administration functions, including maintenance of multiple environments (development, testing, production).
  • Oversees database administration duties such as installations, patching, backup and recovery management, and schema management.
  • Supervises the design and implementation of redundant systems, policies, and procedures for database recovery and data archiving.
  • Monitors and analyzes data platforms to ensure database availability, security, health, efficiency, and recoverability.
  • Builds and manages high availability (HA) and disaster recovery (DR) architectures like Clustering, Replication, and Always On.
  • Implements and manages physical databases of mission-critical systems to determine future storage needs.
  • Collaborates with application owners to develop processes for migrating schema and data to the data platform.
  • Partners with development and quality assurance teams to deliver robust, quality solutions on time.
  • Directs and assists subordinates in testing, developing, and troubleshooting database applications.

Requirements

  • Professional/Vendor Certification(s) in database administration required for the position.
  • A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university and two years of satisfactory full-time experience in database administration, including database design, configuration, installation, troubleshooting, integration, performance monitoring, maintenance, enhancement, and security management.
  • A four-year high school diploma or its educational equivalent and six years of satisfactory full-time information technology experience.
