About the position

The Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) at Duke Primary Care plays a vital role in providing direct patient care and supporting the healthcare team in a clinical setting. This position involves performing both clinical and administrative duties to ensure the smooth operation of the clinic, contributing to the overall mission of compassionate care and community health improvement.

Responsibilities

  • Take medical histories and record vital signs.
  • Explain treatment procedures to patients and prepare them for examinations and procedures.
  • Assist medical and nursing staff during examinations and procedures.
  • Collect and prepare laboratory specimens and perform basic laboratory tests.
  • Take electrocardiograms and remove sutures/staples.
  • Change sterile and non-sterile dressings and promote patient/family understanding of care plans.
  • Document in the patient record and dispose of contaminated supplies.
  • Process instruments and perform high-level disinfection and sterilization of medical instruments.
  • Telephone prescriptions to pharmacies and prepare/administer medications as directed by a physician.
  • Authorize drug refills as directed and perform other clinical functions as delegated by the physician.
  • Greet patients, answer telephones, and schedule appointments in MaestroCare.
  • Checkout patients and arrange for hospital admissions and laboratory services.
  • Update and file patient medical records, fill out insurance forms, and handle billing and bookkeeping tasks.
  • Order clinical and clerical supplies and perform other administrative duties as directed.

Requirements

  • Graduation from an accredited Medical Assistant program (preferred).
  • CMA license required (Level I, II, and III).
  • Certification by AAMA, AMT, NHA-CCMA, NCMA, or ARMA required.
  • BLS certification required.
  • For Level II: At least 1 year of clinical experience as a Medical Assistant in a clinical setting.
  • For Level III: At least 3 years of clinical experience as a Medical Assistant in a clinical setting.

Nice-to-haves

  • Good customer service skills.
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Working knowledge of sterile techniques and special procedures.
  • Knowledge of infection control procedures and safety precautions.
  • Typing skills and familiarity with medical terminology.
