About the position

The Certified Medical Assistant II at OU Health's Prenatal Diagnostic Center plays a crucial role in providing direct patient care in an ambulatory setting. This position involves performing both clinical and administrative duties while ensuring patients feel comfortable and understand the provider's instructions. The role requires adherence to safety guidelines and effective communication with healthcare practitioners and patients.

Responsibilities

  • Provides direct patient care by taking vitals, patient history, venipuncture, lab, x-ray, referrals, and patient phone messages as directed by the provider and/or clinical supervisor.
  • Adheres to National Patient Safety Goals as appropriate based on the level of patient contact this position requires.
  • Contributes to the assessment/re-assessment of patients.
  • Monitors and documents patient status.
  • Manages large call volume while maintaining excellent telephone etiquette.
  • Organizes workflow to meet patient needs in a timely manner.
  • Retrieves and transports medications, instruments, and supplies as needed.
  • Stocks exam rooms, takes inventory, and orders supplies.
  • Makes scheduling arrangements with other healthcare professionals and facilities.
  • Assists with procedures, maintaining sterile field and specimen labeling when necessary.
  • Gathers and documents information about patient condition, including lab values, pain levels, patient education needs, nutritional status, and potential complications.
  • Cleans, sterilizes, and/or disinfects scopes, probes, instruments, and equipment according to manufacturer instructions for use.
  • Participates in the development of the plan of care, including implementation and evaluation of appropriate patient care interventions.
  • Reinforces patient education about medications, post-surgical care, special diets, and changes in treatment plans.
  • Transmits prescription refills as directed.
  • Arranges for hospital admissions and patient care services.
  • May precept new medical assistants.
  • Participates in daily compliance audits, chart checks, and reporting safety events.
  • De-escalates patient concerns.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED required.
  • Completion of an accredited Medical Assistant Program preferred.
  • 3-5 years of experience in Patient Care as a Medical Assistant or similar patient care role preferred.
  • Basic Life Support (American Heart Association) certification required upon hire.
  • One of the following certifications required upon hire: Medical Assistant - American Medical Technologists (AMT), Registered Medical Assistant - American Association of Medical Personnel, Registered Medical Assistant - American Allied Health, Certified Medical Assistant - American Association of Medical Assistants (AAMA), Certified Clinical Medical Assistant - National HealthCareer Association, National Certified Medical Assistant - National Center for Competency Testing (NCCT), Nationally Registered Certified Medical Assistant - National Association for Health Professionals.
  • Advanced knowledge of medical terminology.
  • Ability to interact professionally with healthcare practitioners and patients.
  • Ability to effectively communicate information.
  • Ability to observe and obtain information from all relevant sources.
  • Ability to work independently and as a member of a team.
  • Detail-oriented and able to complete work tasks.
