About the position

The Medical Assistant will perform a multi-purpose function, cross-trained to handle various activities from registration and appointments to administering and documenting immunization shots. The role involves working across departments including Internal Medicine, OB/GYN, and Pediatrics, ensuring quality care is delivered efficiently and effectively. Responsibilities include participating in pre-visit planning, administering medications and vaccines, maintaining control logs, preparing patients for providers, managing prescription refills, and assisting with routine patient care and procedures. The Medical Assistant will also handle clerical duties, protect patient confidentiality, and follow OSHA guidelines.

Responsibilities

  • Participate in the Pre-visit Planning/Huddle process for PCMH compliance.
  • Follow up with lab reports, imaging reports, and patient referrals during pre-visit planning.
  • Administer medications, vaccines, urine samples, pregnancy tests, strep tests, etc., as needed.
  • Assist with maintaining control logs (refrigerator temp monitoring, oxygen tank check, AED checks, glucometer check, emergency kit lock check).
  • Prepare patients for providers based on presenting diagnosis.
  • Manage prescription refill line and electronic prescription requests.
  • Assist with equipment checks to ensure they are in working order.
  • Distribute health educational information and resources to patients.
  • Request discharge summaries from all patients discharged from ED, inpatients, or outside office visits.
  • Ensure quality care is delivered in an efficient and effective manner.
  • Identify and report facility needs and maintain par levels of supplies.
  • Assist providers with routine patient care and procedures.
  • Communicate with patients to identify barriers to care.
  • Collaborate with patient's physician and Nurse Manager regarding care issues.
  • Demonstrate customer service standards continuously.
  • Improve patients' quality of life through collaboration and follow-up care.
  • Ensure fluid and constant patient flow.
  • Maintain well-stocked supplies in exam rooms and central supply area.
  • Perform medication reconciliation during each visit.
  • Conduct screening questionnaires as designated.
  • Perform clerical duties including completing and routing referrals, making appointments, and sending out abnormal lab letters.
  • Protect patient confidentiality and follow OSHA guidelines.
  • Perform tasks related to a 'Clinical Office Assistant' when assigned to the appointment desk.
  • Collect blood specimens and perform laboratory tests as required.
  • Maintain orderliness and cleanliness of work areas and inventory for lab use.
  • Log specimen flow in and out of the lab.

Requirements

  • Graduation from an accredited Medical Assistant Program.
  • Prefer Certified Medical Assistant.
  • 1 - 3 years of Medical Assistant work experience, with the ability to perform phlebotomy procedures.
  • Excellent customer service skills.
  • Basic computer skills and typing.
  • Excellent follow-through skills, prioritization of multiple tasks, and attention to detail.
