About the position
The Certified Medication Aide at UTMB Health's Travis Unit in Austin, Texas, plays a crucial role in providing patient care within a correctional environment. This position involves assisting with various aspects of patient hygiene, medication distribution, and overall health monitoring, ensuring a safe and therapeutic environment for patients. The aide will work closely with nursing staff to support the healthcare needs of underserved populations in the Texas Department of Criminal Justice and the Texas Juvenile Justice Department.
Responsibilities
- Collects, reports and documents data such as vital signs, height and weight, intake and output, and pulse oximetry.
- Performs and reports Point of Care Testing.
- Assists with patient activities and care as assigned by the charge nurse/designee according to the patient's plan of care.
- Provides personal hygiene care including bathing, oral suctioning, and wound care.
- Assists with feeding and ambulating patients, and cares for those with altered mobility.
- Ensures patient safety by assisting with restraints and specific safety precautions.
- Interviews incoming patients and completes receiving/screening forms, informing medical staff of urgent health issues.
- Maintains a safe facility environment and manages pharmacy and nursing medications/supplies.
- Distributes and documents medications according to Texas Administrative Code regulations.
- Maintains drug room security and enters medication compliance into the pharmacy system.
- Maintains patient privacy and confidentiality at all times.
- Practices cost containment and prioritizes work to meet deadlines.
- Promotes positive relationships among co-workers and security staff.
- Participates in continuing education and in-service orientation as required.
Requirements
- High school diploma or GED equivalent.
- Current Texas Certified Medication Aide permit.
