About the position

The Diabetes Educator position at Mason General Hospital is a per diem role within the Diabetes Education department, designed to provide essential diabetes education services and support to the Diabetes Wellness Center (DWC). This position is non-union and offers a flexible schedule, primarily consisting of 8-hour day shifts as needed. The compensation for this role ranges from $35.44 to $51.02 per hour, depending on experience and qualifications. As a Diabetes Educator, the individual will be responsible for assessing and evaluating patients with diagnosed diabetes, identifying their educational needs, and developing personalized care plans to enhance their self-management skills. This role requires a deep understanding of diabetes management, including knowledge of insulin delivery systems and continuous glucose monitoring systems. The educator will conduct both individual and group training sessions, focusing on various aspects of diabetes management, such as healthy eating, physical activity, medication management, and coping strategies. They will also monitor patient progress, document educational activities, and make necessary adjustments to care plans in collaboration with healthcare providers. The position demands ongoing professional development to stay updated on the latest advancements in diabetes treatment and education. Additionally, the educator will serve as a liaison to other healthcare professionals and community organizations, fostering relationships for referral and networking purposes. Overall, this role is crucial in empowering patients to manage their diabetes effectively and improve their quality of life.

Responsibilities

  • Assess and evaluate individuals with diagnosed diabetes to identify knowledge deficits and education needs.
  • Develop unique educational care plans tailored to individual needs and lifestyles.
  • Conduct group training and behavioral interventions to educate patients and families about diabetes management.
  • Monitor and document ongoing patient progress to ensure effective diabetes self-management skills are developed.
  • Make assessments regarding insulin adjustments to control blood sugar, as authorized by physician orders.
  • Maintain current knowledge of diabetes disease processes and treatment advancements.
  • Respond to patient and family inquiries in a timely manner, providing necessary referrals when required.
  • Evaluate the effectiveness of training activities and recommend changes to instructional methods and programs.
  • Participate in the development and revision of diabetes educational materials and programs.
  • Serve as a liaison to MGH personnel and other professional organizations regarding diabetes education.

Requirements

  • BA or MS in Dietetics, or an Associate degree in Nursing (Bachelor's degree preferred).
  • Minimum 1 year of recent work experience in adult education and care of people with a chronic disease.
  • Certified by the state of Washington as a Dietitian, and Registered Dietitian (RD) by the Academy Nutrition and Dietetics, or current licensure as a Registered Nurse (RN) by the Washington State Board of Nursing.
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification, or within 180 days of hire.

Nice-to-haves

  • Certified Diabetes Care and Education Specialist is strongly preferred.
