About the position

The Certified Occupational Therapist Assistant (COTA) at Mary Free Bed Rehabilitation plays a crucial role in providing occupational therapy services under the supervision of an occupational therapist. This position is dedicated to helping patients regain their independence and improve their quality of life through tailored therapeutic interventions. The COTA is responsible for assisting in treatment planning, conducting evaluations, and delivering patient care while adhering to the organization's mission of restoring hope and freedom through rehabilitation.

Responsibilities

  • Assist occupational therapist in treatment planning and conducting evaluation procedures.
  • Provide patient care, treatment, and services within the scope of their license, certification or registration.
  • Assist in treating patients utilizing modalities, therapeutic exercise, assistive devices, and functional activities.
  • Provide verbal and/or written feedback to primary occupational therapist regarding significant observations or changes in the patient's condition.
  • Aid the occupational therapist in estimating equipment and supply needs and may participate in the acquisition and inventory of these items.
  • Document patient's status and progress according to established internal/external time standards and adherence to reimbursement guidelines.
  • Communicate with other appropriate people to integrate OT treatment as necessary.
  • Participate in educational programs for patients, families, and healthcare workers regarding treatment procedures and home programs.
  • Participate in patient care conferences as requested.
  • Follow hospital policy and procedures including patient confidentiality and infection control.
  • Meet or exceed program productivity expectations.
  • Support program operations as assigned.
  • Function as patient advocate.
  • Demonstrate competence in relevant software and hardware required to meet job responsibilities.
  • Serve as clinical instructor for occupational therapist assistant students.
  • Participate in program development and/or research activities as assigned.
  • Assist in maintaining clean and orderly treatment areas.

Requirements

  • Graduate of an accredited Occupational Therapy Assistant program.
  • Certification by the National Board for Certification in Occupational Therapy.
  • Licensure with the State of Virginia.
  • Physical ability to lift, position, and transport patients with physical impairments.
  • BLS Certification - American Heart 'Healthcare Provider' (HCP) - AHA Approved.
