The Certified Orthoptist at the University of Pittsburgh Physicians will support the Division of Pediatric Ophthalmology, Strabismus, and Adult Motility. This full-time position involves evaluating and treating patients with ocular motility disorders in a clinical setting, providing care to both children and adults. Responsibilities

  • Work in a multi-specialty practice referring patients for sensorimotor evaluation and treatment.
  • Advise patients with low vision on magnification and strategies to maximize their vision.
  • Make diagnoses and formulate treatment plans, including referrals for surgery or conservative treatments.
  • Undertake general administrative duties related to patient care and train students and health professionals.
  • Receive patient referrals and assess their vision, eye position, and movement using specialist equipment.
  • Conduct visual field assessments and participate in extended role activities like glaucoma monitoring clinics.
  • Work as part of a multidisciplinary team, liaising with occupational therapists and physiotherapists.
  • Perform preliminary examinations of patients before the physician's examination and assist in the operating room when necessary.
  • Engage in continuing professional development and keep up to date with current practices.
  • Develop a program of orthoptic and ophthalmic research in collaboration with the division chief.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree required, preferably in a medical field.
  • Graduates of accredited orthoptic schools in the U.S. seeking national certification from the American Orthoptic Council.
  • Certification through the American Orthoptic Council is mandatory within the first three years of employment.
  • Licensure and clearances including Act 31, Act 33, Act 34, and Act 73 FBI Clearance.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in pediatric ophthalmology or related fields.
  • Familiarity with ocular motility disorders and treatment methods.
  • Strong communication skills for instructing patients and training staff.
