The primary responsibility involves medication distributive functions and pharmacy operational tasks, which include assisting the pharmacist with preparing and dispensing medications, managing inventory, and ensuring regulatory compliance. The role requires active participation in the effective daily operation of all department services and programs, including accurately responding to medication dispensing requests, preparing medications for pharmacist review, and managing the return of unused or expired medications to appropriate pharmacy areas. As a pharmacy technician, you will actively perform all pharmacy functions and maintain proficiency in standard work parameters, hospital and pharmacy-specific computer systems, and operational programs. You will be expected to maintain operational expertise and competency, providing coverage in areas such as central/distributive pharmacy operations, sterile compounding, and automated dispensing cabinet delivery. Additionally, you will be responsible for handling controlled substances and may also engage in quality assurance activities, medication history, and supporting clinical services. The role also emphasizes teamwork and inter-professional collaboration, requiring you to work effectively with all members of the healthcare team to ensure the best outcomes for patients. You will be expected to demonstrate sensitivity to the perspectives of patients and caregivers, actively support teammates, and utilize effective negotiation skills to resolve conflicts. Furthermore, you will have opportunities to mentor new staff and pharmacy students, participate in quality improvement initiatives, and support regulatory compliance efforts. Overall, this position is integral to maintaining high standards of pharmacy practice and contributing to the overall mission of AdventHealth.

Responsibilities

  • Actively participates in outstanding customer service and maintains respectful relationships.
  • Provides medication distributive functions and pharmacy operational tasks.
  • Assists the pharmacist with preparing and dispensing medications.
  • Manages inventory and ensures regulatory compliance.
  • Accurately responds to medication dispensing requests and prepares medications for pharmacist review.
  • Delivers checked medications and returns unused or expired medications to appropriate areas.
  • Maintains proficiency in pharmacy technician functions and hospital-specific systems.
  • Provides coverage in central/distributive pharmacy operations, sterile compounding, and automated dispensing.
  • Handles controlled substances and participates in quality assurance activities.
  • Facilitates medication safety practices and reports potential medication errors.
  • Collaborates with pharmacy staff and care providers to optimize care.
  • Mentors new staff and pharmacy students, supporting their learning experiences.
  • Participates in departmental meetings and educational activities.
  • Supports practice advancement initiatives and clinical research projects.

Requirements

  • High School Graduate or Equivalent and 1 year of experience.
  • One year of hospital pharmacy experience (retail or ambulatory experience acceptable for medication history function).
  • Applicable State Pharmacy Technician Registration (RPT).
  • Sterile Compounding Certification, if applicable per state legislation.
  • Current certification from Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB), ICPT, or NHA.

Nice-to-haves

  • Associates degree or technical degree in a related field or specific certification related to the position, preferably in a physical science, business, or healthcare.
