About the position

The Certified Pharmacy Technician at Regional One Health plays a crucial role in the outpatient center by performing various technical functions and activities related to the preparation, packaging, drug distribution, IV admixtures, and record-keeping of pharmaceuticals and controlled substances. This position requires a strong commitment to patient care and adherence to established policies and procedures under the supervision of a licensed pharmacist. The technician will be responsible for preparing unit dose medications, filling unit dose carts, and compounding non-sterile pharmaceutical products. Additionally, the technician will prepare, label, and document IV products while utilizing aseptic techniques and laminar flow hoods for sterile product preparation. In this role, the technician will also be responsible for documenting medication orders, delivering patient medication orders to various units, and maintaining required prescription and medication records. The technician must demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide technical services and maintain clinical competency to effectively support patient care and clinical services. This includes reading physician's prescribed medication orders, selecting medications, and presenting filled orders to the pharmacist for review. The technician will operate computerized data systems for order entry and inventory control, ensuring that all pharmacy-related items are received, transported, and stored appropriately. The position requires the technician to maintain a clean and orderly work environment, utilize supplies cost-effectively, and adhere to safety and infection control standards. The technician will also interact with patients and medical staff, promoting patient satisfaction and effective communication. Continuous training and education are essential, as well as participation in performance improvement activities. Flexibility to work nights, weekends, and holidays is required to ensure continuous pharmacy coverage.

Responsibilities

  • Provides assistance and performs technical pharmacy services under supervision of licensed pharmacist.
  • Prepares unit dose medications and fills unit dose carts.
  • Calculates, weighs and compounds ingredients to prepare non-sterile pharmaceutical products.
  • Prepares, labels and documents IV products.
  • Uses aseptic techniques and the laminar flow hood in preparing and labeling syringes, IV admixtures, and sterile products.
  • Packages and appropriately labels all dosage forms used in the pharmacy.
  • Documents medication orders.
  • Delivers patient medication orders to units.
  • Maintains required prescription/medication and other department records.
  • Demonstrates knowledge and skills to provide technical services and maintain clinical competency.
  • Reads physician's prescribed medication orders specifying name, quantity, strength, frequency and method of administration of drugs.
  • Selects the medication from pre-packaged, or unit dose stock and counts the prescribed quantity.
  • Places the drug in appropriate patient medication drawer/bin.
  • Presents filled order to the Pharmacist for review.
  • Post charges into computer system from the medication administration record and other charge documents.
  • Adjusts patient profile accordingly to reflect physician's desire to continue or discontinue said drug.
  • Operates computerized data systems and performs order entry functions in accordance with departmental policies and procedures.
  • Receives, transports and stores necessary pharmacy-related items to and from pharmacy areas.
  • Assists in inventory control including ordering stock rotation and return of outdated medications.
  • Maintains perpetual inventory of pharmaceuticals and supplies in the dispensing areas assigned.
  • Replenishes medicine carts for nursing units and checks for outdated or contaminated drugs.
  • Orders supplies and stocks under proper conditions.
  • Maintains a safe and orderly arrangement of pharmaceuticals and supplies in the pharmacy and nursing areas.
  • Cleans and maintains all pharmacy related equipment.
  • Reports malfunction of equipment to supervisor.
  • Maintains confidentiality in matters relating to patient/family, department and hospital information.
  • Works effectively and serves as intermediary between patient care units and pharmacy.
  • Interacts and communicates in a customer responsive and courteous manner.
  • Works collaboratively with medical/hospital staff and patients to coordinate and implement activities.
  • Maintains a clean, orderly, safe environment to minimize risk to patients and staff.
  • Completes required continuous training and education, including department specific requirements.
  • Responds to problems/opportunities to improve work environment and participates in unit based performance improvement activities.
  • Provides support to pharmacy and other ancillary personnel to provide clinical assistance as needed.
  • Assists in the orientation and supervision of students when they provide patient care, treatment and services as part of their training.
  • Provides coverage for relief and absences.

Requirements

  • Successful completion of Pharmacy Technician program or equivalent education.
  • Valid Registered Pharmacy Technician license upon hire.
  • Minimum 1 year experience as Pharmacy Technician.
