About the position

As a pharmacy technician at Prisma Health, you will work under the direction of a pharmacist to perform various pharmacy-related functions in compliance with department policies and procedures. This role is essential in ensuring the smooth operation of the pharmacy and the delivery of quality healthcare services to our patients. You will be an active member of the pharmacy team, responsible for interpreting and preparing medication orders, making deliveries to nursing units, compounding medications (both sterile and non-sterile), and performing quality assurance responsibilities. A certified pharmacy technician may also participate in Tech-Check-Tech functions, enhancing the efficiency and accuracy of medication dispensing. Your primary responsibilities will include accurately interpreting and preparing medication orders by filling provider orders, medication kits/trays, automated dispensing cabinets, and floorstock requisitions. You will also be responsible for completing cart fills and code tray refills, handling controlled substances in compliance with regulations and policies. Proficiency with work-related computer and automation skills is crucial, as you will be solving problems related to automated dispensing cabinets, inventory management technology, label printers, unit dose packing machines, IV room automation, and other pharmacy-specific technologies. Additionally, you will ensure timely delivery of medications to the appropriate patient care areas, adhering to established schedules and workflows. In this role, you will also adhere to regulatory guidelines for pharmacy compounding, ensuring appropriate documentation as outlined by compounding policies. Providing excellent customer service is a key aspect of your responsibilities, which includes answering phone calls promptly, servicing the pharmacy window efficiently, and maintaining a clean and orderly work environment. You will complete assigned quality assurance tasks, including expiration checks, clean room documentation, temperature monitoring, inventory checks, and equipment maintenance. Furthermore, you will actively participate in the training and mentorship of new pharmacy personnel, demonstrating and maintaining competency in Tech-Check-Tech functions by accurately checking products filled by other technicians or pharmacists.

Responsibilities

  • Accurately interprets and prepares medication orders by filling provider orders, medication kits/trays, automated dispensing cabinets, and floorstock requisitions.
  • Completes the cart fill and code tray refills accurately.
  • Handles all controlled substances in compliance with regulations and policies.
  • Demonstrates proficiency with work-related computer and automation skills through problem solving for automated dispensing cabinets, inventory management technology, label printers, unit dose packing machines, IV room automation, and other pharmacy-specific technologies.
  • Accurately enters patient charges and credits.
  • Delivers medications to the appropriate patient care area or department, per established schedule and workflow in a timely manner.
  • Removes and evaluates medications remaining in delivery, return bins, and medication refrigerators.
  • Adheres to regulatory guidelines for pharmacy compounding of sterile and non-sterile preparations, including appropriate documentation as outlined by compounding policies.
  • Provides excellent customer service, including answering the phone within three rings and maintaining a clean and orderly work area.
  • Completes assigned quality assurance work by assuring all logs and pending tasks for shift are completed.
  • Participates in training of new personnel and mentorship of new pharmacy technicians and pharmacy interns.
  • Demonstrates and maintains competency in Tech-Check-Tech functions by accurately checking products filled by another technician or pharmacist.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • 1 year hospital experience preferred.
  • State Certified Registration with the SC Board of Pharmacy.
  • Thorough knowledge of medical and pharmacy terminology; possess good mathematical, computer, and aseptic technique skills.
  • Knowledge of SCBOP/DHEC/DEA rules/regulations.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills in dealing with subordinates, peers, supervisors and others outside the department.
  • Problem solving abilities; able to work in team situations; handle urgent, stressful conditions.
