About the position

The Certified Pharmacy Technician I-IV plays a crucial role in supporting pharmacists by assisting in the storage, preparation, distribution, reconciliation, and charging of medications and healthcare products. This position operates under the direct supervision of a pharmacist and adheres strictly to the Texas State Board of Pharmacy Rules and Regulations. The technician is responsible for ensuring that all medications are prepared and labeled accurately and efficiently, with a final check from the pharmacist before any medication is dispensed or delivered. This role is essential in maintaining the integrity of the pharmacy operations and ensuring that patients receive their medications safely and effectively. In addition to medication preparation, the technician is tasked with tracking prescription orders through pharmacy programs to guarantee that patients receive correct delivery information. Confidentiality of patient information is paramount, and the technician must ensure that all interactions and processes uphold this standard. Inventory management is another critical responsibility, where the technician monitors stock levels, communicates when reorders are necessary, and manages drug supplies in a cost-effective manner to minimize waste. The technician will also perform routine tasks that require a foundational understanding of pharmacy practices, typically gained through technical training. As they develop their competency, they will engage in structured work assignments and receive guidance from experienced staff. The role includes preparing IV medications using aseptic techniques under pharmacist supervision, maintaining unit dose readiness, and performing quality control activities to ensure compliance with legal and regulatory standards. In the outpatient pharmacy setting, the technician assists in triaging and filling prescriptions, performing cashier functions, and providing excellent customer service to patients. This position is vital in ensuring that the pharmacy operates smoothly and that patients receive the highest quality of care.

Responsibilities

  • Accurately and efficiently prepares and labels medications, obtaining a final check from the pharmacist before dispensing or delivering any medication.
  • Tracks prescription orders via pharmacy programs to ensure correct delivery information is given to patients.
  • Maintains confidentiality of patient information.
  • Monitors and ensures adequate inventory is maintained in all areas, communicating when products need to be reordered.
  • Manages drug supplies in a cost-effective manner and identifies opportunities to minimize waste.
  • Ensures medication management processes meet all legal and regulatory requirements.
  • Performs routine tasks using existing policies, demonstrating conceptual knowledge of theories, practices, and procedures within the discipline.
  • Develops competency by performing structured work assignments and receiving guidance from others.
  • Accurately prepares IVs utilizing aseptic technique under the supervision of a pharmacist, in accordance with USP Guidelines and Texas State Board of Pharmacy Rules and Regulations.
  • Assists in maintaining unit dose readiness of bulk products and verifies barcode scan accuracy.
  • Makes timely rounds and accurately transports medications and other pharmacy supplies to assigned areas.
  • Replenishes stock in the automated dispensing system, crash cart trays, and specialty medication boxes accurately and timely.
  • Performs and documents quality control activities, including monthly medication storage area inspections, and completes required log sheets.
  • Assists in triaging and filling prescriptions while maintaining productivity standards in the outpatient pharmacy.
  • Performs cashier functions and processes daily and ad hoc reports.
  • Verifies and updates patient demographic, insurance, and prescription information into the computer system.
  • Assists patients by providing excellent customer service directly and via the telephone.

Requirements

  • Current registration with the Texas State Board of Pharmacy.
  • National certification through National Healthcareer Association (NHA) or Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB).

Nice-to-haves

  • High School Diploma, GED, or equivalent.
  • Graduate from a pharmacy technology program.
  • Sterile Compounding Certification accredited by the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE).
