About the position

The Certified Rigger is responsible for assembling rigging to lift and move equipment or materials on construction projects. This role involves selecting appropriate rigging equipment, ensuring safety during hoisting operations, and directing crane operators or hoisting engineers to facilitate the safe movement of loads.

Responsibilities

• Select cables, ropes, pulleys, winches, blocks, and sheaves according to the weight and size of the load to be moved.
• Attach pulley and blocks to fixed overhead structures, such as beams, ceilings, and gin pole booms, using bolts and clamps.
• Attach loads with grappling devices, such as loops, wires, ropes, and chains, to crane hooks.
• Give directions to Bridge-or-gantry-crane Operator or Hoisting Engineer engaged in hoisting and moving loads to ensure safety of workers and materials handled, using hand signals, loudspeaker, or telephone.
• Set up, brace, and rig hoisting equipment using hand tools and power wrenches.
• Splice rope and wire cables to make or repair slings and tackle.
• Direct workers engaged in hoisting machinery and equipment into ships, designated as Machinery Erector.
• When hoisting and moving construction machinery onto truck beds, may be designated as Machine Mover.

Requirements

• Must have Advanced Rigging NCCER certification.
• Ability to direct or plan an activity.
• Ability to attain set limits or standards.
• Ability to perform simple arithmetic accurately.
• Ability to make decisions based on measurable standards.
• Physically capable of seeing well (naturally or with correction).
• Ability to climb and/or maintain balance.
• Ability to stoop, kneel, crouch, and crawl.
• Ability to reach for, handle, and manipulate objects.
• Ability to lift objects weighing up to 100 pounds or more, with frequent lifting and carrying of objects weighing 50 pounds or more.
• Ability to work at heights.
