About the position

Decorah High School is seeking a passionate and collaborative Certified Social Studies Teacher for the 2025-2026 school year. This role is essential in shaping students' understanding of the world, guiding them to explore historical complexities, evaluate current events, and prepare for future challenges. The curriculum emphasizes critical thinking, effective communication, and civic responsibility, aiming to equip students to become informed and engaged citizens.

Responsibilities

• Teach Social Studies courses aligned with the Core Social Studies Standards.
• Create dynamic, engaging lesson plans that foster critical thinking, collaboration, and effective communication.
• Build a positive, inclusive classroom environment supporting academic and personal growth.
• Provide personalized and group support to help students achieve their academic goals.
• Monitor student progress, offering constructive feedback to foster growth and achievement.
• Build strong, supportive relationships with students to inspire confidence, motivation, and engagement.
• Participate actively in Professional Learning Communities (PLCs) to align teaching practices with instructional goals.

Requirements

• Valid teaching certification in Social Studies for the state of Iowa.
• Strong knowledge of Social Studies content and pedagogy.
• Ability to create engaging lesson plans and foster a positive classroom environment.
• Experience in providing personalized support to students.

Nice-to-haves

• Experience teaching Advanced Placement (AP) courses in Social Studies.
• Experience teaching courses in partnership with Northeast Iowa Community College (NICC).
