About the position

This position is responsible for ensuring that all surgical supplies, instruments and equipment are properly inventoried, decontaminated, assembled, inspected, packaged, sterilized, stored, distributed and tracked in a quality / timely manner throughout the hospital. Will train to perform these duties independently and without close supervision. Responsibilities

  • Operates and monitors sterilization equipment.
  • Prioritizes daily tasks based on interpretation of surgical schedule, determining the requirement for instruments for each surgical case.
  • Disassembles carts and follows Universal Precautions for decontamination.
  • Sterilizes, disinfects durable medical equipment and instruments, packages clean supplies and instruments, maintains records for all instruments and transports sterilized items to the floor.
  • Assembles sterilized instruments and rechecks all instruments for cleanliness and/or impairment. Properly checks power equipment.
  • Takes measures to allow for easy instrument tracking including following labeling processes, use of engraver, reporting and documenting all missing instruments and implants replaced in trays.
  • Communicates the equipment and instrument inventory status with the Central Processing staff and Surgery Charge Nurse including order status, back orders and/or changes.
  • Responds to emergency situations by ensuring all emergency, trauma and add-on cases are supplied properly and delivered to the Operating Room in a timely manner.
  • Utilizes applications and technology to accurately facilitate record keeping in accordance with State and Federal regulations.
  • Provides on the job training on the job training (OJT) to newly hired associates in the department.
  • Promotes mission, vision, and values of SCL Health, and abides by service behavior standards.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
  • May be required to work overtime based on business need.
  • May be required to float to other departments (within scope of competency and qualifications) based on business need.
  • May be required to be placed on-call during a regularly scheduled shift.

Requirements

  • High School diploma or equivalent
  • Certified Registered Central Supply Technician (CRCST) or Certified Sterile Processing Department Technician (CSPDT), or Certified Surgical Technician (CST)
  • Competent working knowledge in all aspects of Sterile Processing

Nice-to-haves

  • 1+ year of experience in a hospital or clinic operating room
