About the position

The Certified Sterilization Technician is responsible for the decontamination, cleaning, processing, distribution, storage, and sterilization of surgical instrumentation in the Sterile Processing area. This role is crucial for ensuring that the necessary surgical instruments are available and properly prepared for surgeries, requiring interaction with surgeons, nurses, and the operating room team.

Responsibilities

  • Decontaminate, clean, inspect, process, and assemble surgical instrumentation for the Operating Room and Sterile Processing area.
  • Operate and maintain pre-vacuum/gravity steam sterilizers, washer/decontaminators, and automatic endoscope reprocessors.
  • Test sterilizers and maintain accurate records of sterilization processes.
  • Disinfect video scopes and auxiliary equipment using manual washing techniques and automated systems.
  • Conduct visual inspections and operational testing of video scopes and auxiliary equipment.
  • Understand and apply cleaning protocols for all instruments used in the Operating Room.
  • Assemble instrument trays and equipment according to assembly count sheets.
  • Wrap or pouch items using appropriate wrapping techniques based on instrument type.
  • Run machine-specific challenge tests using internal, external, and biological tests.
  • Check the Operating Room schedule daily to prioritize surgical cases and supplies needed.
  • Collaborate with Supply Chain to organize supplies systematically for surgical cases.
  • Comply with federal and state regulations, as well as AAMI, OSHA, and infection control policies.
  • Perform minor troubleshooting of equipment and coordinate with service technicians when necessary.
  • Maintain and distribute sterile supplies and emergency equipment throughout the hospital.
  • Participate in and lead process improvement initiatives.

Requirements

  • 6 months of Surgical Services experience preferred.
  • HSPA CRCST (Certified Registered Central Sterile Technician) certification required.
  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Skills in inventory management, analytical skills, problem solving, interpersonal skills, and written and verbal communication.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and work effectively in a team.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with Microsoft Office and computer proficiency.
