About the position

The Certifying Scientist is responsible for reviewing and interpreting screening and confirmation results for donor specimens to ensure accuracy and forensic defensibility of results. The role involves working towards a team goal of timely release of result reports. The position has multiple levels, each with increasing responsibilities and requirements.

Responsibilities

  • Review and process screening batches including chain of custody and screening batch data for error flags.
  • Complete Custody and Control forms for negative and negative dilute samples.
  • Organize data and file for storage or further review.
  • Recognize the importance of turnaround time and work towards timely release of specimens.
  • Interface cooperatively with all departments to direct corrective action in case of batch failure or documentation issues.
  • Answer incoming phone calls/emails and assist clients and Medical Review Officers regarding the status and analysis of results.
  • Communicate clearly as an expert when explaining aspects of accessioning, screening, and review of data.
  • Maintain confidentiality of all client information.
  • Comply with applicable federal, state, and local safety and health regulations.
  • Keep work area neat and clean.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • A doctoral, master's, bachelor's, or associate degree in medical technology, clinical laboratory, chemical, or biological science.
  • Bachelor's Degree or higher with training/experience as specified in 42CFR493.1489 for High Complexity Testing.
  • 4 years of pertinent laboratory experience for Acting Technical Supervisor.
  • Prior experience as a certifying scientist is highly desirable.
  • LC/MS experience is highly desirable.
  • Experience with screening operations is highly desirable.
  • Experience with automated analyzers is desirable.

Nice-to-haves

  • Familiarity with PC.
  • Strong working knowledge of appropriate SOPs and relevant information services.
  • Detail-oriented with strong analytical and organizational skills.
  • Good communication skills and ability to work under pressure.
  • Ability to interact and communicate appropriately with other employees, clients, and management.
