About the position

The Chairperson of Health and Human Services at Western Michigan University is responsible for providing leadership and management for the department of Speech, Language, and Hearing Sciences. This role involves promoting shared governance, strategic planning, faculty development, and fostering a culture of excellence in teaching and scholarship. The Chair will also engage with external constituencies for fundraising and outreach, manage accreditation processes, and ensure compliance with university policies and regulations.

Responsibilities

  • Promote shared governance within the department.
  • Provide overall management and leadership for departmental functions and activities.
  • Recruit, hire, develop, support, retain, and evaluate faculty and staff.
  • Engage in strategic planning including program planning, implementation, and assessment.
  • Manage financial resources and departmental budgets.
  • Foster excellence in faculty teaching and support a learner-centered culture.
  • Encourage scholarship and externally funded grants and contracts.
  • Lead fundraising efforts and develop relationships with external constituencies.
  • Conduct outreach activities consistent with the duties of Chair, including community relations.
  • Engage the Speech, Language and Hearing Sciences community for program support.
  • Direct accreditation processes and maintain standards including student assessments and outcomes.
  • Advocate for university goals and policies, and represent the department in discussions with university agents and the community.
  • Manage student enrollment and retention with an emphasis on academic excellence and diversity.
  • Contribute to the university's mission and the Diversity and Multiculturalism Action Plan.
  • Participate in interdisciplinary research, instruction, and community collaborations.
  • Engage in service at the department, college, university, and community level.

Requirements

  • Earned Doctorate in Speech and Hearing Sciences or a related field from an accredited institution.
  • Demonstrated record of academic leadership.
  • Evidence of academic administrative experience.
  • Academic rank qualifying for professor with tenure.
  • Evidence of integrity, ethics, equity, and compassion.
