About the position

The Chaplain Resident position at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS) is designed for individuals pursuing Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE). This role involves providing direct pastoral care to patients, families, and staff within a healthcare setting, fostering learning through reflection on pastoral encounters. The Chaplain Resident will engage with diverse religious and cultural backgrounds, participate in interdisciplinary meetings, and share on-call responsibilities, all while being supervised by the Director of Pastoral Care and Clinical Pastoral Education Training Programs.

Responsibilities

  • Provide pastoral care and counseling services to patients, their loved ones, and staff.
  • Participate in the delivery and arrangement of appropriate care in assigned areas.
  • Respond to requests for pastoral care in a timely manner.
  • Document pastoral/spiritual assessments of patients.
  • Participate in offering worship opportunities and meeting sacramental needs.
  • Support an interdisciplinary approach to pastoral care by participating in team meetings and rounds.
  • Assist in coordinating local clergy and pastoral visitors from the community.
  • Keep records of pastoral activity and chart in the patient's record.
  • Provide education on Advance Directives and ethical issues in healthcare.
  • Engage in daily group meetings for action reflection learning and professional development.

Requirements

  • A four-year undergraduate degree (BA or BS) from an accredited organization is required.
  • A seminary graduate degree (Master of Divinity, Theology, Counseling, or equivalent) is preferred.
  • Minimum of one unit (400 hours) of Clinical Pastoral Education Training is preferred.
  • The candidate should have a theological and psychological understanding of religious and human dynamics, medical ethics, and pastoral counseling in a healthcare setting.
