About the position

The Charge Nurse at Fresenius Medical Care North America plays a critical role in ensuring quality patient care and maintaining cost-effective clinical operations. This position involves managing daily decisions to ensure continuity of care, overseeing the delivery of safe and effective outcomes, and providing guidance and support to direct patient care staff. The Charge Nurse is responsible for compliance with regulatory requirements and facility policies, as well as training and orienting staff to maintain high standards of care.

Responsibilities

  • Provide day-to-day guidance, support, and direction to direct patient care staff.
  • Participate in department staffing and appropriate hiring, firing, and disciplinary actions.
  • Ensure compliance with all company and facility approved procedures and policies.
  • Approve or disapprove time or personnel schedule changes in the absence of the Facility Administrator.
  • Participate in patient care plan meetings.
  • Maintain knowledge in current practices related to dialysis principles and techniques.
  • Train and orient staff as necessary.
  • Routinely observe and guide direct patient care staff for appropriate technique and adherence to facility policies.
  • Promote compliance with OSHA programs to maintain a safe working environment.
  • Maintain overall shift operation in a safe, efficient, and effective manner.
  • Conduct staff meetings with the Facility Administrator to keep patient care staff informed of changes.
  • Supervise all documentation of patient information.
  • Assess daily patient care needs and develop patient care assignments appropriately.
  • Assume primary responsibility in emergency situations.
  • Monitor and supervise all patient care activity during dialysis and assist as necessary.
  • Collaborate with the direct patient care team in decision-making for patient care.
  • Administer medications to patients per physician's orders.
  • Act as a subject matter expert and resource for staff members.
  • Supervise and participate in completion of short and long-term care plans.
  • Admit new patients according to facility procedure.
  • Educate patients and families about End Stage Renal Disease, dialysis therapy, diet, and medication.
  • Supervise the safe and effective use of all equipment involved in direct patient care.
  • Attend and participate in monthly Quality Assurance meetings.

Requirements

  • Graduate of an accredited school of Nursing (R.N.)
  • Must be registered and licensed to practice in the applicable State.
  • Minimum of 12 months of nursing experience.
  • 6 months of specialized experience providing clinical nursing care to dialysis patients.
  • Medical/surgical nursing experience preferred.
  • Supervisory or management experience preferred.
  • Certified in CPR or successfully complete a CPR certification course.
  • Good communication skills - verbal and written.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in a chronic or acute dialysis setting.
