About the position

The Charge Nurse in the Medical Surgical 3N department at Kaweah Health is responsible for overseeing efficient operations and providing high-quality nursing care. This role involves leadership accountability, supporting the interdisciplinary healthcare team, and advocating for patients and their families. The Charge Nurse serves as a primary clinical resource, mentor, and role model for staff, ensuring effective problem-solving and decision-making in patient care.

Responsibilities

  • Assist with oversight of efficient operations to protect and promote health, prevent illness and injury, and alleviate suffering through nursing diagnosis and treatment.
  • Demonstrate high-level leadership accountability in the professional practice setting.
  • Provide leadership and support for staff through effective problem solving and decision making.
  • Act as a primary clinical resource for staff on the assigned unit.
  • Represent the leadership of the unit in the absence of the Assistant Nurse Manager, Nurse Manager, or Director.
  • Support nurse preceptors and new employees during orientation.
  • Manage staff and patient flow by preparing and adjusting staff assignments based on patient needs.
  • Prioritize care based on the needs and acuity of patients on the unit.
  • Assign admissions and arrange transfers in coordination with House Supervisor, Bed Coordinator, or Manager as appropriate.
  • Monitor breaks to provide adequate staffing and determine staffing needs for the next shift.
  • Facilitate nurse/physician collaboration by modeling professional communication.
  • Coordinate care in high-risk/emergent situations and keep Nurse Manager/Director/Nursing Supervisor aware of critical patients and any unit issues.
  • Promote a positive and professional environment for internal and external customers.

Requirements

  • Current CA RN license
  • BLS Certification
  • Mid-level ACLS Certification
  • Laboratory experience
  • ICU experience
  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) or currently enrolled in RN-BSN program
  • Minimum of two years RN experience in specialty area

Nice-to-haves

  • Nationally recognized certification per specialty
  • Master of Science in Nursing (MSN)
