About the position

The RN Clinical Charge Nurse at Kennestone Hospital is responsible for directing and overseeing the daily activities of the unit during an assigned shift, ensuring the safe and effective delivery of patient care. This role involves not only leadership but also direct patient care responsibilities, as the Charge Nurse often takes on modified patient assignments. The Charge Nurse operates within a clinical environment managed by Nurse Managers and other leaders, supported by the WellStar Shared Governance Model. This model emphasizes evidence-based practice and research, guiding the competencies required for nursing practice. In this position, the RN Clinical Charge Nurse plays a crucial role in establishing and maintaining practices that ensure excellence in patient care while efficiently utilizing resources. Key leadership tasks include managing staff schedules, overseeing unit patient flow, providing subject matter expertise for clinical concerns, participating in physician rounding, and being involved in committees and survey readiness. The Charge Nurse also serves as a resource for other areas, facilitating learning about operational functionality and enhancing hospital awareness. The RN Clinical Charge Nurse is expected to assist in the growth and development of team members, fostering skill sets within the department and inspiring expertise among peers. This leader is instrumental in building rapport between nurses and physicians, thereby enhancing service delivery to patients. All RN Clinical Charge Nurses must be licensed and knowledgeable, adhering to the Georgia Professional Nurse Practice Act and the ethical standards set forth by the American Nurses Association. As part of the patient services team, the Charge Nurse upholds the voice of the patient and supports the system's policies and service excellence goals. This role requires advanced clinical expertise to promote safe, age-appropriate, and culturally aware patient care, working collaboratively within an interdisciplinary team to ensure high-quality care for patients, families, and significant others.

Responsibilities

  • Direct and oversee daily activities of the unit on assigned shifts.
  • Ensure successful and safe delivery of patient care.
  • Take on modified patient care assignments as needed.
  • Manage staff schedules and unit patient flow.
  • Provide subject matter expertise for clinical concerns.
  • Participate in physician rounding and committee involvement.
  • Assist in survey readiness and other tasks assigned by the manager.
  • Support the growth and development of team members in the unit.
  • Build rapport between nurses and physicians to enhance patient service.
  • Uphold the voice of the patient and support service excellence goals.

Requirements

  • Graduate of an accredited/approved school of nursing with an Associate Degree/Diploma in Nursing.
  • Baccalaureate degree in nursing (BSN) preferred.
  • Current/active license as a registered nurse in the State of Georgia.
  • Current BLS card from the American Heart Association on the first day of employment.
  • National certification in area of specialty preferred.
  • One year of nursing experience required; two years preferred.
  • Experience as relief charge with clinical expertise preferred.
  • Ability to read, write, and speak English fluently.
  • Basic computer skills and ability to optimize technology in clinical care.
  • Strong interpersonal, critical thinking, and decision-making skills.
  • Effective communication skills, both orally and in writing.
  • Analytical skills necessary to solve technical, clinical, and managerial challenges.

Nice-to-haves

  • National certification in area of specialty preferred.
  • Experience as relief charge with clinical expertise preferred.
