About the position

The Charge Nurse position at Houston Methodist Hospital is a full-time role for a licensed Registered Nurse (RN) who provides leadership and clinical expertise in the management and delivery of safe patient care. This role involves mentoring and coaching nursing staff, ensuring high-quality patient care, and fostering a collaborative environment among healthcare teams. The Charge Nurse is responsible for overseeing unit operations, improving patient satisfaction, and maintaining compliance with nursing standards and regulations.

Responsibilities

  • Lead unit and shared governance activities.
  • Assess unit needs related to practice and improvement opportunities.
  • Serve as a clinical resource for both unit and hospital staff.
  • Coordinate unit and hospital-wide education in partnership with management.
  • Foster staff engagement through active listening and feedback.
  • Role model interprofessional communication and assist with staff stress management.
  • Improve departmental scores for turnover/retention on unit-based scorecard.
  • Provide input into staff performance reviews as appropriate.
  • Function as a mentor and resource to unit staff.
  • Identify and resolve organizational conflict with patients, families, and healthcare team members.
  • Lead patient and family-centered care standards.
  • Maintain ongoing interactions with patients, families, and staff to improve patient care.
  • Drive department service standards to improve patient satisfaction scores.
  • Participate in initiatives to improve quality and safety scores on unit and hospital scorecards.
  • Implement department strategies to achieve financial targets on unit-based scorecard.

Requirements

  • Bachelor of Science degree or higher from an accredited School of Nursing.
  • Twenty-four months of clinical nursing experience with demonstration of progressive leadership skills.
  • RN - Registered Nurse - Texas State Licensure and/or Compact State Licensure within 60 days.
  • BLS - Basic Life Support (AHA) certification.
