The Chemical Compounding Engineer will ensure successful manufacturing of Desktop Metal photopolymer resins both in-house and at contracted manufacturers by managing supply chain, developing SOPs, compounding resin, and overseeing third-party activities. This role is critical in coordinating with various departments to design procedures for manufacturing photopolymer resin formulations, developing production scale-up formulations and procedures, and planning and directing oversight of the production schedule. The engineer will manufacture photopolymer resin following current standard operating procedures (SOP) and maintain the integrity and cleanliness of the work area in accordance with company standards and policies. Additionally, the Chemical Compounding Engineer will develop, implement, and monitor preventative maintenance programs for equipment, troubleshoot production problems, and generate Certificates of Analysis (CoA) for products for both in-house and contracted manufacturers. This position requires collaboration with the purchasing department to acquire, manage, and maintain chemical, physical, and disposable inventory to meet production demand, as well as overseeing the creation and updates of SOPs with contract manufacturers. The engineer will also be responsible for maintaining proper documentation of vendor production batches and CoAs, ensuring a smooth and efficient production process.

Responsibilities

  • Coordinate with all departments to design procedures to manufacture photopolymer resin formulations
  • Develop production scale-up formulations and procedures
  • Plan and direct oversight of production schedule
  • Manufacture photopolymer resin following current standard operating procedures (SOP)
  • Maintain the integrity and cleanliness of the work area with respect to company standards and policies
  • Develop, implement, and monitor preventative maintenance programs for equipment
  • Troubleshoot production problems, whether process or material issues, and implement corrections that will minimize impact to production and eliminate root cause
  • Generate CoA for products for both in-house and contracted manufacturers by coordinating with the analytical department
  • Work with purchasing to acquire, manage and maintain chemical, physical and disposable inventory to meet production demand
  • Oversee the creation/updates of SOPs with contract manufacturers
  • Answer technical questions to assist in contract manufacturers scale up process
  • Maintain proper documentation of vendor production batches and CoAs
  • Plan and direct oversight of production activities from contracted manufacturers

Requirements

  • 2-5 years of experience working in chemical compounding
  • Knowledge of manufacturing batch procedures
  • Ability to follow sound scientific methods and perform design of experiments
  • Experience in a chemical laboratory
  • Experience handling chemicals
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to occasionally lift up to 50 pounds unassisted

Nice-to-haves

  • 5-7 years of experience working in chemical compounding
  • Previous experience with photopolymer resins
