About the position

As a Chemical Engineer Co-Op, you will play a crucial role in improving our chemical processes, focusing on yield and process capacity improvements, waste reductions, and cost improvements. This position involves troubleshooting mechanical equipment and providing recommendations to enhance reliability and reduce costs associated with our processes. You will also be involved in the design, installation, and start-up of automatic process control systems, material handling, and distributive control systems. In this role, you will assist engineers in developing project objectives and scope by analyzing customer requirements and producing necessary documentation for customer approval. Ensuring compliance with engineering standards, OSHA, EPA standards, and plant safety standards is paramount in all projects you undertake. You will collaborate with other engineers to gain insights into maintenance and reliability improvement programs within chemical plants, perform engineering calculations, and may assist with the procurement process of equipment specifications and contract administration. Your responsibilities will also include conducting engineering cost, feasibility, and planning studies, analyzing customer needs, and providing recommendations based on your findings. Collaboration with production and technical staff will be essential for troubleshooting and problem-solving across all operational areas to achieve project goals. Additionally, you will aid in the implementation of the Operational Excellence program and support Process Improvement/Lean Manufacturing initiatives across the site.

Responsibilities

  • Help improve chemical processes focusing on yield/process capacity improvements, waste reductions, and cost improvements.
  • Troubleshoot and provide recommendations for mechanical equipment to improve reliability and reduce costs.
  • Design, install, and start-up automatic process control, material handling, and distributive control systems.
  • Assist engineers in developing project objectives and scope by analyzing customer requirements and producing necessary documentation.
  • Ensure compliance with engineering standards, OSHA/EPA standards, and plant safety standards on all projects.
  • Collaborate with other engineers to gain insights into maintenance and reliability improvement programs in chemical plants.
  • Perform and check engineering calculations following standard methods and principles for projects.
  • Assist with the procurement process of equipment specifications, bid evaluation, and contract administration.
  • Conduct engineering cost, feasibility, and planning studies analyzing customer needs and data, providing recommendations to customers.
  • Collaborate with production and technical staff on process troubleshooting and problem-solving to drive project goals attainment.
  • Aid in the implementation of the Operational Excellence program and support Process Improvement/Lean Manufacturing initiatives.

Requirements

  • Enrolled in Bachelor's or Master's Degree program in Chemical Engineering.
  • Successfully completed sophomore year or higher.
  • Ability to drive to and from work location.
  • Willingness to work in a chemical plant environment.
  • Ability to work 40 hours per week and physically able to climb stairs and ladders.
  • Available for a 6-month Co-Op assignment for Spring 2025 (January to June) or Fall 2025 (May/June to December).

Nice-to-haves

  • Minimum overall GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale.
  • Proficient in MS Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
