We are currently seeking a Chemical Engineer - Process Controls to join our team at the Carson, California Refinery. This position is crucial for providing technical support for DCS, SCADA, PLC, and HMI automation systems. The successful candidate will be responsible for programming and maintaining control logic, HMI, alarms, and various control engineering applications. This role will involve troubleshooting and improvement requests from Operations, as well as interfacing with Engineering, Instrumentation, Measurement, Environmental, and Process Safety teams to enhance control system reliability and optimize plant assets. The Chemical Engineer will work on a 9/80 or 4/1 schedule, with the possibility of extended hours and occasional after-hours support. The role includes responsibilities such as developing regulatory and complex control logic to meet operational and economic objectives, creating and revising Cause and Effect diagrams, applying HMI best practices, and managing data reporting through control system historian and PI interfaces. Additionally, the engineer will support alarm management improvement efforts, commission projects involving new control system hardware, and understand the process hazard lifecycle and associated functional safety applications. This position requires a proactive approach to support and lead PSM activities, including Management of Change, HAZOP, and LOPA, while also performing troubleshooting and incident investigations. The engineer will collaborate closely with OT and Cyber Security groups to maintain network system availability, reliability, and security. Responsibilities

  • Develop regulatory and complex control logic to meet operational and economic objectives
  • Create/Revise Cause and Effect diagrams and detailed control system narrative documents
  • Apply HMI best practices to control system graphics
  • Commission projects, including new control system hardware and I/O
  • Participate in alarm management improvement efforts
  • Manage data reporting through control system historian and PI interfaces, PI Vision displays
  • Build DCS communication interfaces, including Vapor Recovery, Burner Management, Compressor Control, and Motor Control systems
  • Understand process hazard lifecycle and associated functional safety and SIS applications
  • Read, review and mark up P&IDs, loop drawings, and logic drawings
  • Support/lead PSM activities such as Management of Change, HAZOP, and LOPA
  • Perform troubleshooting and incident investigations
  • Support a wide range of communications protocols including Modbus, OPC, DeviceNet, and DSA
  • Work in close collaboration with the OT and Cyber Security groups in supporting and maintaining network system availability, reliability, and security

Requirements

  • Must have a degree in Chemical Engineering (Education must be obtained/completed prior to start date)
  • Must have at least 7 years of Process Controls experience in a refinery, petro-chemical or other related heavy industry
  • Must have HMI Design and Development experience
  • Must have experience with Honeywell DCS (TDC 2000, TDC3000, Experion)
  • Must be proficient in Microsoft: Word, Excel and Outlook
  • Must be able to wear appropriate PPE in the refinery and physically perform all tasks in the field
  • Must take hair drug test and physical
  • Must have a valid driver's license (MPC determines valid status)
  • Must be legally authorized to work in the US without the need for future VISA sponsorship

Nice-to-haves

  • Preferred more than 7 years industry experience in Process Automation and Control, SCADA, I&E, PLC, SIS
  • Preferred programming PLC controllers (Allen Bradley CLX, Schneider Tricon)
