About the position

The Chemical/Environmental Engineer/Scientist position at Barr Engineering is designed for an entry-level candidate who will engage in a variety of fast-paced and challenging tasks aimed at providing environmental support to clients in the fuels, mining, manufacturing, and power sectors. This role is pivotal in helping clients navigate the complex regulatory landscape associated with air, water, and waste management. The successful candidate will leverage their technical background to develop innovative solutions that ensure clients maintain flexibility and profitability while adhering to environmental regulations. In this position, the engineer/scientist will be responsible for interpreting environmental regulations, calculating emissions, and preparing compliance documentation. This includes writing regulatory and technical analysis memos, developing compliance tools, and compiling permit applications. The role may also involve on-site client support, which could require out-of-town travel. The ideal candidate will possess strong problem-solving and communication skills, enabling them to effectively collaborate with project teams, regulators, and clients. The work environment is dynamic and may involve exposure to rough terrain typical of construction sites, as well as working in facilities with limited accessibility and moving machinery. Safety training will be provided, and candidates should be prepared for potential physical demands associated with the role, including an OSHA-mandated physical exam. This position offers a hybrid work arrangement, allowing for a combination of office and remote work, based out of Barr's Hibbing, Minnesota office.

Responsibilities

  • Provide environmental support to clients in fuels, mining, manufacturing, and power sectors.
  • Read and interpret environmental regulations and guidelines.
  • Calculate emissions and prepare compliance documentation.
  • Write regulatory and technical analysis memos.
  • Develop compliance tools to assist clients in meeting regulatory requirements.
  • Compile and prepare permit applications for clients.
  • Engage in on-site client support, which may require travel.
  • Communicate effectively with project team members, regulators, and clients.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in chemical or environmental engineering, or a related scientific degree.
  • Internship or post-college professional experience in industry, an environmental agency, or environmental consulting.
  • Strong interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills.
  • Strong technical and problem-solving skills with attention to detail.
  • Demonstrated leadership skills and intrinsic motivation for client service.
  • Strong computer skills, particularly in using spreadsheets.
  • Possession of a valid driver's license and acceptable driving record.
  • Legal authorization to work in the United States without sponsorship.
