About the position

The Chemical/Environmental Engineer/Scientist position at Barr Engineering is designed for an entry-level candidate who will engage in a variety of fast-paced and challenging tasks aimed at providing environmental support to clients in the fuels, mining, manufacturing, and power sectors. This role is pivotal in helping clients navigate the complex regulatory landscape associated with air, water, and waste management. The successful candidate will leverage their technical knowledge to develop solutions that enhance client flexibility and profitability while ensuring compliance with environmental regulations. In this position, you will be responsible for interpreting environmental regulations, calculating emissions, and preparing compliance documentation. This includes writing regulatory and technical analysis memos, compiling permit applications, and developing compliance tools that assist clients in meeting their regulatory obligations. The role may also involve on-site client support, which could require out-of-town travel. The ideal candidate will possess strong problem-solving abilities and excellent communication skills, enabling them to effectively collaborate with project teams, regulators, and clients. The position is based in Minneapolis, Minnesota, and offers a hybrid work arrangement, allowing for a combination of office and remote work. Candidates must be prepared to work in various environments, including construction sites and industrial facilities, which may present challenges such as rough terrain and limited accessibility. Safety training will be provided, and an OSHA-mandated physical exam may be required to ensure readiness for the physical demands of the job.

Responsibilities

  • Provide environmental support to clients in the fuels, mining, manufacturing, and power sectors.
  • Interpret environmental regulations and calculate emissions for compliance purposes.
  • Write regulatory and technical analysis memos to support client needs.
  • Prepare routine compliance submittals and compile permit applications.
  • Develop compliance tools to assist clients in meeting regulatory requirements.
  • Engage in on-site client support, which may involve out-of-town travel.
  • Communicate effectively with project team members, regulators, and clients.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in chemical or environmental engineering or a related scientific degree.
  • Internship or post-college professional experience in industry, an environmental agency, or environmental consulting.
  • Strong interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills.
  • Strong technical and problem-solving skills, with attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Demonstrated leadership skills and intrinsic motivation with an emphasis on client service.
  • Strong computer skills, including proficiency in spreadsheets.
  • Possession of a valid driver's license and acceptable driving record.
  • Legal authorization to work in the United States without the need for sponsorship.
