About the position

The Chemical Process Engineer at ARTAZN LLC is responsible for providing engineering and technical support to the Coinage Department's manufacturing operations, with a specific focus on Electroplating and Metal Finishing processes. This role involves tracking key input and output metrics for the department and developing action plans to meet or exceed departmental objectives. The engineer will determine run rates and line layouts for future plating jobs, write crane programs to control plating lines, and review real-time and scrap reports to ensure proper plating operations. In addition to overseeing operations, the engineer will troubleshoot process problems, schedule line maintenance, and provide technical support across various processes including electroplating, annealing, and burnishing. The role requires leading cost improvement initiatives aimed at enhancing safety, quality, efficiency, and cost-effectiveness. The engineer will also work collaboratively with various departments to assess existing process capabilities, identify areas for improvement, and evaluate new processes or equipment to meet market demands. Documentation is a key aspect of this position, as the engineer will develop and maintain control plans, work instructions, and inspection forms, while also assisting in training operators. The role includes working closely with the EH&S Department to ensure compliance with safety and environmental regulations, coordinating with the Maintenance Department, and collaborating with the Quality Department to ensure products meet specifications. The engineer will utilize methodologies such as 8D, 5 Why, FEMA, and Design of Experiments to drive operational improvements and will be responsible for training and directing Process Technicians. Overall, this position plays a critical role in ensuring the efficiency and effectiveness of the Coinage Department's manufacturing processes, contributing to ARTAZN's commitment to quality and innovation in zinc-based products.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee operation, troubleshoot process problems, and schedule line maintenance for the Coinage Department.
  • Provide technical support for electroplating, annealing, and burnishing processes.
  • Lead and direct cost improvement initiatives focused on safety, quality, efficiency, and cost.
  • Determine run rates and line layouts for future plating jobs.
  • Write crane programs to control plating lines for proper operation.
  • Review real-time and scrap reports to ensure proper plating operation.
  • Evaluate existing process capabilities and identify areas for improvement.
  • Develop and maintain documentation for processes including control plans and work instructions.
  • Train operators and involve them in cross-functional teams as necessary.
  • Work with EH&S Department to ensure safe and environmentally compliant operations.
  • Coordinate Maintenance Department work in assigned areas.
  • Collaborate with key leaders to determine root causes and corrective measures.
  • Work with Quality Department to ensure products meet specifications and address customer complaints.
  • Collaborate with Development Department to roll out and scale up new processes.
  • Use 8D, 5 Why, FEMA, and Design of Experiments to improve operations.
  • Train and direct Process Technicians.
  • Perform cross-section analysis and physical measurements using various tools.

Requirements

  • Bachelor of Science Degree in Chemical Engineering preferred.
  • Minimum of Bachelor of Science in Chemistry, Materials Engineering, or Industrial Engineering.
  • 5 years minimum experience in a relevant field.
  • Experience in electroplating highly preferred.
  • Certified Electroplater Finisher (CEF) preferred.
  • Understanding of cost accounting concepts.
  • Good written and oral communication skills with all levels of the organization.
  • Good interpersonal skills, ability to lead by example, and function with cross-functional teams.
  • Continuous Improvement (Lean, Six Sigma, etc.) skills preferred.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with cost accounting concepts.
  • Knowledge of Continuous Improvement methodologies such as Lean and Six Sigma.
