About the position

As a Chemical Process Engineer at Tesla, Inc. in Sparks, NV, you will play a crucial role in ensuring the quality and integrity of materials used in the manufacturing of battery cells. Your primary responsibilities will include conducting material testing through both routine testing and failure analysis, developing analytical procedures, and supporting the establishment of achievable quality standards. You will work closely with scientists and engineers to perform failure analysis and establish testing protocols that prevent the manufacturing of poor vehicle components. In this position, you will ensure that all testing is performed in accordance with laboratory practices, which will involve training and method controls, as well as conducting dashboard reviews. You will be responsible for performing chemical testing of raw materials, which includes elemental analysis by ICP-OES, anions/cations by IC, volatile organic compounds by GC/MS, specific gravity, pH, titrations, and various other tests as needed. Additionally, you will maintain all chemical analytical equipment, which includes performing daily preventative maintenance, creating calibration curves, troubleshooting issues, and collaborating with service engineers. You will also be tasked with maintaining databases, logs, and associated supplies related to the testing processes. Your role will require you to escalate any circumstances that may affect the quality and integrity of scientific operations. You will also be responsible for authoring standard operating procedures and training materials for laboratory users. Furthermore, you will interpret and communicate the results of non-routine and failure analysis testing to cross-functional factory teams, ensuring that all stakeholders are informed and that quality standards are upheld.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, or a related scientific field (foreign degree equivalent accepted) and 5 years of experience as a Chemist or related role in a laboratory or quality operations setting.
  • Alternatively, a Master's degree in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, or a related scientific field (foreign degree equivalent accepted) and 3 years of experience as a Chemist or related role in a laboratory or quality operations setting.
  • Experience in chemical testing of raw materials for manufacturing.
  • Experience with elemental analysis by ICP-OES, anions/cations by IC, volatile organic compounds by GC/MS, specific gravity, pH, and titrations.
  • Experience with chemical analytical equipment, including daily preventative maintenance, calibration curves, and troubleshooting.
  • Familiarity with ISO9001 and ISO17025 regulations.
  • Experience working in a laboratory setting subject to OSHA regulations and requirements.
  • Experience in a setting involving Environmental Health & Safety, Design Engineering, and/or Manufacturing Engineering.
