About the position

The Chemist - Data Validator position at Montrose is a critical role for professionals with experience in environmental analytical data validation and management. Located in the Phoenixville, PA office, this position may also be remote for candidates with sufficient relevant experience. The role is designed for a non-laboratory-based environmental chemist who will work closely with both private industry and government clients, including the EPA and DoD. As a key member of the team, the Chemist - Data Validator will engage in a variety of responsibilities that ensure the integrity and usability of environmental data. In this role, you will review analytical data generated by environmental laboratories, ensuring compliance with corporate and US EPA data validation standard operating procedures, quality assurance project plans, and published analytical methods. You will prepare data quality and usability assessment reports, which will be subject to peer review by project managers and senior chemistry staff. Effective communication with laboratory personnel is essential to ensure proper sample processing and to address any irregularities encountered during data review. Additionally, you will assist in the preparation of Quality Assurance Project Plans (QAPPs) to ensure that laboratory capabilities and sample collection procedures meet project data quality requirements. Your responsibilities will also include receiving and reviewing electronic data from laboratories, uploading analytical data into project databases, generating data summary tables, and maintaining proactive communication with clients and contractors. You will be expected to uphold confidentiality, adhere to safety regulations, and participate in continuous improvement programs while staying current with industry trends through training and professional development opportunities.

Responsibilities

  • Review analytical data generated by environmental laboratories in an organized and efficient manner, consistent with corporate and US EPA data validation standard operating procedures.
  • Prepare data quality and data usability assessment reports for peer review by project managers and senior chemistry staff.
  • Communicate with laboratory personnel to ensure proper processing of samples and to address irregularities in analytical data.
  • Assist with the preparation of Quality Assurance Project Plans (QAPPs) to ensure laboratory capabilities meet project data quality requirements.
  • Receive and review electronic data from laboratories, upload analytical data into project databases, and generate data summary tables.
  • Act as a liaison between field personnel and laboratories to ensure proper sample collection and reporting.
  • Maintain professional communication with clients and client contractors, ensuring confidentiality at all times.
  • Exercise safe work practices by following company safety rules and OSHA regulations.
  • Participate in continuous improvement programs and support team efforts.
  • Stay updated on industry trends through formal training and professional workshops.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Chemistry or an allied science from an accredited college or university.
  • 5+ years of environmental analytical data validation experience or environmental analytical laboratory experience focused on environmental analyses and quality assurance review.
  • Ability to review environmental laboratory data for completeness, correctness, compliance, and usability using corporate data validation standard operating procedures and US EPA guidelines.
  • Strong understanding of US EPA methods for the preparation and analysis of environmental samples.
  • Good understanding of analytical chemistry principles and their application to data quality assurance reviews.
  • Experience working with the Department of Defense or State/local government is a plus.
  • Strong understanding of data usability principles and their application to environmental data review.
  • Familiarity with automated data review tools and environmental data management systems such as EQuIS is strongly desired.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, analytical and critical thinking skills, and computer literacy, including advanced skills with Microsoft Office Suite and Adobe Acrobat.

Nice-to-haves

  • Familiarity with UFP and State/EPA Region Brownfields QAPP formats is desired.
  • Previous work experience in environmental chemistry is a plus.
