About the position

The Chemist III position at the City of Houston involves supervising daily activities within the environmental wastewater laboratory. The role requires performing advanced chemical analyses, managing laboratory information systems, and ensuring compliance with safety protocols. The Chemist III will also conduct microbiological analyses, prepare solutions, maintain inventory, and develop new analytical procedures, contributing to the overall efficiency and effectiveness of the laboratory operations.

Responsibilities

  • Supervise daily activities within the environmental wastewater laboratory.
  • Perform highly technical chemical analyses using advanced instrumentation.
  • Manage the Laboratory Information Management System, including project building and data transfer.
  • Supervise the Sample Administration receipt and documentation process.
  • Conduct microbiological analyses and routine chemical analyses of various samples.
  • Prepare standard solutions and reagents for chemical testing.
  • Assist in the development and maintenance of safety protocols.
  • Maintain inventory and order laboratory chemicals, equipment, and supplies.
  • Perform sensitive or special technical assignments as required.
  • Design and implement quality assurance procedures.
  • Develop new analytical procedures to expand laboratory capability.
  • Direct and participate in applied research projects and write technical reports.
  • Direct operations staff regarding treatment protocols and troubleshoot treatment problems.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Chemistry or a closely related field.
  • Detailed knowledge of water and wastewater treatment practices and regulations.
  • Two years of analytical experience, with at least one year using sophisticated electronic instrumentation.

Nice-to-haves

  • Environmental laboratory experience.
  • Experience with Promium Element LIMS.
  • Knowledge of Federal and State regulations concerning environmental and potable water quality.
