About the position
The Chemist position is located within the Lab Services & Applied Science Division of the EPA's Region 6. This role involves analyzing environmental samples for contaminants, developing and validating methods, and ensuring adherence to laboratory quality control systems. The position requires regular physical presence at designated duty stations, with some flexibility for remote work after meeting eligibility requirements. The Chemist will provide technical expertise and communicate findings through reports.
Responsibilities
- Analyze routine and non-routine environmental samples for contaminants and chemical parameters.
- Develop, modify, and validate analytical methods.
- Implement and adhere to laboratory quality control system requirements.
- Provide technical expertise and assistance based on environmental sample analysis.
- Interpret and evaluate data to determine its significance and communicate findings in reports.
Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in physical sciences, life sciences, or engineering with coursework in chemistry, mathematics, and physics.
- At least one year of full-time experience equivalent to the GS-12 level in chemical analyses and laboratory operations.
- Skill in using sophisticated laboratory instruments such as gas chromatographs and mass spectrometers.
- Knowledge of chemical contaminants and parameters, as well as chemistry-based quality control procedures.
- Knowledge of federal, state, local, or tribal environmental regulations.
Nice-to-haves
- Experience in developing and implementing standard operating procedures.
- Technical assistance experience on environmental sample analysis.
