About the position

The Chemistry Prep Technician is responsible for the precise preparation of construction material samples, such as concrete, rock, and aggregate, for petrographic and chemical analysis. This role is crucial for maintaining sample integrity and safety, following established protocols to ensure accurate and reliable test results. The technician works under the guidance of senior laboratory staff and collaborates with various teams to meet project timelines and quality standards.

Responsibilities

  • Cut, grind, and polish samples of concrete, rock, and other materials with high precision according to specific protocols.
  • Accurately transport, measure, and prepare chemicals necessary for sample treatment, adhering to established handling procedures.
  • Operate, clean, and maintain laboratory equipment such as saws, grinders, mixers, and scales to ensure optimal functionality.
  • Follow standard operating procedures (SOPs) for sample preparation and handling, ensuring compliance with safety and quality standards.
  • Record data meticulously at each preparation and testing stage for accurate documentation and quality control.
  • Work closely with petrographic and chemistry teams to provide prepared samples and ensure alignment with project timelines.
  • Adhere to all laboratory safety protocols, including the use of personal protective equipment (PPE).
  • Participate in team meetings and training sessions, assisting in onboarding new lab personnel as needed.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to improve laboratory processes and maintain operational efficiency.
  • Keep updated on advances in chemistry and materials science relevant to construction materials.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Previous experience in sample preparation or a laboratory environment preferred but not required.
  • Strong attention to detail with the ability to perform precise sample preparation and testing.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team, supporting chemists and lab personnel.
