About the position

The Cherokee Immersion Teacher Assistant I plays a vital role in supporting the education of students in the Cherokee language. This position involves assisting with classroom supervision, implementing lesson plans, and maintaining communication with parents and staff. The assistant is responsible for creating a conducive learning environment and may take charge of the classroom in the absence of the certified teacher.

Responsibilities

  • Assist with the supervision of students in the classroom.
  • Assist with instruction to students in Cherokee language according to set lesson plans and curriculum using Cherokee syllabary.
  • Assist in the development of lesson plans.
  • Teach daily lessons in the Cherokee language.
  • Operate language technology equipment.
  • Assist in maintaining records and reports as required.
  • Be responsible for the overall classroom in the absence of the Certified Teacher.
  • Assist in physically arranging the room and equipment for learning sessions.
  • Work with teachers to maintain communication with parents and staff in both written and verbal form.
  • Prepare the classroom by ensuring the room is clean and orderly.
  • Participate in all co-curricular and extra-curricular events.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED); or six months related experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Must possess a valid driver's license with a driving history verified through a motor vehicle report that meets requirements for Cherokee Nation underwriting rating.
  • Fluency in Cherokee Language with reading and writing proficiency in Cherokee Syllabary.
