About the position

The Chief Administrative Officer (CAO) for the Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences (DOVS) at the University of Wisconsin-Madison is responsible for providing administrative leadership and operational expertise across the department's clinical, educational, and research programs. This role involves managing complex organizational structures and ensuring effective delivery of health services, education, and research initiatives while fostering a collaborative environment that prioritizes people. The CAO will oversee multiple affiliations and administrative areas, ensuring compliance with regulations and promoting the department's mission of excellence in patient care and education.

Responsibilities

  • Provides leadership for the strategic and short-term planning processes, obtaining and validating data for decision-making.
  • Manages the department's clinical, research, teaching, and service programs to ensure efficient operations.
  • Oversees training programs including residency, fellowship, and continuing medical education (CME).
  • Administers budgets across multiple organizations, ensuring compliance with financial regulations and practices.
  • Exercises supervisory authority over staff, including hiring, performance management, and disciplinary actions.
  • Manages office, research, and clinical space, as well as department information systems and regional network development.
  • Responsible for communication and marketing of department activities and engaging potential donors.

Requirements

  • Seven or more years of progressively responsible professional experience in managing complex organizations, preferably in an academic medical center.
  • Demonstrated understanding of the academic medical center's missions of teaching, research, clinical service, and community service.
  • Strong leadership skills with effective communication and interaction abilities with faculty, staff, and students.
  • Experience in finance/budgeting, human resources, grants administration, IT, and marketing/communications.
  • Proven negotiation skills and ability to prioritize workload effectively under pressure.
  • Commitment to diversity and inclusion.
