About the position

The Chief Administrative Officer (CAO) oversees ambulatory services for a multi medical center/hospital service area within The Permanente Medical Group (TPMG). This executive role is responsible for aligning the regional vision and performance strategy, ensuring operational excellence, and enhancing the care experience for members and communities. The CAO collaborates with the Physician In Chief (PIC) to lead cultural, clinical, and business strategies while managing day-to-day operations in outpatient and select inpatient settings.

Responsibilities

  • Develops and champions a member-centered culture of service and quality excellence.
  • Incorporates customer feedback to align systems and processes with member values.
  • Champions change and innovation, encouraging diverse thinking and new strategies.
  • Identifies and spreads best practices to promote consistency and excellence.
  • Develops goals and strategic growth objectives in collaboration with the PIC.
  • Contributes to regional strategies leveraging TPMG's potential.
  • Builds relationships across the medical group and community to advance strategies.
  • Leads local labor strategy and operationalizes bargaining unit contracts.
  • Establishes and leads engagement initiatives with the PIC.
  • Creates career development systems for team members.
  • Anticipates talent gaps and builds development opportunities.
  • Promotes equity, diversity, and inclusion in the workplace.
  • Delivers effective communication strategies to motivate performance excellence.
  • Maintains compliance with policies and regulations, advocating for new regulations.
  • Utilizes data for informed decision-making and performance accountability.

Requirements

  • Minimum ten (10) years of general management and operations experience in a complex healthcare setting.
  • Minimum three (3) years of experience managing a large physician group practice through influence and collaboration.
  • Masters degree in healthcare, hospital, business or public administration, or related field.

Nice-to-haves

  • Ambulatory care management and clinical operations experience.
  • Three (3) years of experience in a complex union/management environment.
  • Experience in a matrix organizational structure.
  • Knowledge of marketing strategy and competitive decision-making.
